لئنif indeed كانis الرقيبthe watcher بلاءan affliction قومٍsome people
لئن كان الرقيب بلاء قومٍ
فماthen nothing عنديin my view أجلmore esteemed منthan الرقيبthe watcher
فما عندي أجل من الرقيب
If indeed the watcher is an affliction to some people,
If a watchdog is a plague to a tribe,
then to me, none is more esteemed than the watcher.
I have nothing dearer than a watchdog.

وهجرand estrangement الخلthe dear friend خيرbetter للأديبfor the man of refinement
وهجر الخل خير للأديب
Being barred from the beloved is easier to bear than his departure,
The veil of familiarity is easier than its removal,
and a dear friend's estrangement is better for a man of refinement.
And the separation of a friend is better for the refined.
