وملت إليه بالمودة والذكر

I sought solace from remembering my beloved in another,

and turned to him with affection and remembrance.

فما زادني إلا اشتياقاً وحرقةً

إليه ولم أملك سلوي ولا صبري

Yet this only increased my longing and burning anguish

for him, and I could command neither my solace nor my patience.

وما الحب إلا فرحة أن نكلتها

وما الحب إلا فرحة أن نكلتها

بأخرى قرنت الضرب منك إلى الضر

بأخرى قرنت الضرب منك إلى الضر

Love is but a joy; if you torment it

with another, you add the blow you deal to the hurt.

فلا تطف نار الحب بالحب طالباً

فلا تطف نار الحب بالحب طالباً

سلواً فإن الجمر يسعر بالجمر

سلواً فإن الجمر يسعر بالجمر

So do not quench love’s fire with love, seeking

solace, for embers are kindled by embers.
