I repent to you for breaking the pledges,

so that you may shield my eyes from sleeplessness.

أسأت فلا تعني بالدعاوي

فهأنذا أقر بلا شهود

I have done wrong; do not trouble me with accusations,

for here I am, confessing without witnesses.

وقد كان الجحود علي سهلاً

ولكني أنفت من الجحود

ولكني أنفت من الجحود

And denial was easy for me,

but I disdained denial.

فقل لي لا عدمتك من مسيء

فقل لي لا عدمتك من مسيء

بما استحللت نقض عرى العهود

بما استحللت نقض عرى العهود

So say to me—may I never lose you—wrongdoer that I am:

On what grounds did you deem it lawful to break the bonds of the pledges?

ألا يا نفس قد أخطأت فيما

أتيت فإن نجوت فلا تعودي

أتيت فإن نجوت فلا تعودي

Take heed, O soul: you have erred in what

you did; if you escape, do not return to it.

فكم جانٍ تجافى غير جهلٍ

فكم جانٍ تجافى غير جهلٍ

فعاد فلم يذق طعم الهجود

فعاد فلم يذق طعم الهجود

For many an offender turned away, not out of ignorance,

then returned and did not taste sleep.
