ولا فككت من الأغلال مأسورا

Have you not, in love, given drink to one of the thirsty,

If you have not, in love, quenched a thirst,

nor freed from fetters one held captive?

nor freed a captive from his shackles,

لقد ذللت على محض الهوى لك لا

لقد ذللت على محض الهوى لك لا

لأجل ما كان مرجوّاً ومدخورا

لأجل ما كان مرجوّاً ومدخورا

Surely I humbled myself to you for love alone—not

I have indeed humbled myself to you out of pure love, not

for anything that might be hoped for or laid in store.

for the sake of anything hoped for and held in store.

فحسب نفسي عناً علمي بموضعها

من الهوى حسب أن كنت معذورا

Suffering enough for my soul is knowing its place

So my knowledge of its place is anguish enough for my soul

in love—enough, even were I held excused.

ميلاً إليها له من دون مألكة

فلست أنساه موصولاً ومهجورا

an inclination of its own toward her, without any sovereignty—

through its own inclination toward yours, without a message;

I cannot forget it, lonely and forsaken.

so I do not forget it, whether united or forsaken.

إني وغلة نفسي فيك قائمة

لم تلق مذ ألفتك النفس تغييرا

Truly, my soul’s burning thirst for you endures;

Truly, while my soul's burning thirst for you endures,

since it grew intimate with you, the soul has known no change.

لم يهوك القلب إن أظهرت أنت له

nor did the heart come to it by compulsion, overpowered.

لكنه من أمور اللَه ممتنعٌ

Rather, it is among God’s affairs, beyond

description; the All-Merciful ordained it by decree.

Reason can master only what it can govern,

and in love you will find no governance by reason.

كن محسناً أو مسيئاً وأبق لي أبداً

Be kind or cruel, but remain mine forever;

in either case, you will have my gratitude.
