We keep company in chastity, tending our affection.

فإن محا الشوق فرط الأنس أو حشنا

أنس العواذل أن جدوا وأن لعبوا

And if abundant intimacy erased longing, we were made lonely

If yearning erased the excess of intimacy or we were ungracious

By the reproachers' company, whether they were earnest or jesting.

The intimacy of the gallant is to be playful if they are serious

فما ندافع بالهجران فهو على

Nor are we rebuffed with estrangement, for he is intent on

So we do not defend with estrangement, for it is

عاينت منزلةً في الظرف عاليةً

You would have beheld a lofty station in refinement,

I saw a lofty position in circumstance

And a rank whose reach other ranks fell short of.

And a rank too short for its prestige

في عفةٍ نتحامى أن يلم بها

In chastity, we take care lest it be touched

In a chastity we vie lest touched by

By ill suspicions, and lest doubts treacherously destroy it.
