ألاAh! ياO لقوميto my people (for help) للهوىagainst passion المتزايدever-growing
وطولand the length of اشتياقyearning الراحلthe traveler المتباعدfar away
Ah, my people, help me against this ever-growing passion
Oh my people, for the ever-growing passion
And the long yearning of the traveler far away!
And the longing of the traveler gone far,
رحلتI departed لكيso that أحظىI might gain favor إذwhen أبتI returned قادماًarriving
فأوردنيso it led me to water الترحالjourneying سوءbadness المواردthe watering places
I set out to gain favor when I returned,
I traveled so I could come to you, but you refused,
But my travels led me to wretched watering places.
So my wandering brought me only misfortune,
كأنيas though I were لديغٌone bitten حارwas baffled عنabout كنهtrue nature دائهhis ailment
طبيبٌa physician فداواهso he treated him بسمwith the venom of الأساودthe black snakes
As though I were one bitten, whose ailment's true nature baffled
As if bitten by a viper, ignorant of its nature,
A physician, who then treated him with the venom of black snakes.
A doctor tried curing me with a viper's venom,
فمالso it sided معwith الداءthe disease القديمold دواؤهhis remedy
فياso, O لكfor you منof داءٍan ailment طريفٍnew وتالدand old
So his remedy sided with the old disease—
So his cure mixed with my old affliction,
And oh, what an ailment, both new and old!
What a wondrous and tenacious disease!
