You have been invited; so heed joy's caller.

And time has grown pleasant for you: drink and be merry.

And this is the herald of the new spring,

Bringing us glad tidings that it has drawn near:

    Narcissus, delighting with fragrant musk,

And exquisite craftsmanship and wondrous form.

    Boughs of chrysolite have sprouted

Silver for us, blossoming with gold.

When they are gathered in mountains of silk,

And stand before you like dolls,

So their due is to behold the drinkers,

While their market has flourished with quaffers,

And for you to ask God for long life

For ʿAbd al-Malīk, king of the Arabs.

For without his virtues, they would not charm,

And without his noble qualities, they would not be fragrant.
