    وأَغْنَيْتَ حَتَّى أُعْدِمَ المُعْدِمُ العُدْمَا

    You found solace, till the lovelorn was made to forget sorrow;

and enriched others, till the destitute was stripped of destitution.

Otherwise, how could it have ambushed the Pole Star and Suhā,

confronted al-Jawzāʾ and singled out the star?

How could calamities approach you, when they dared not hope

to inflict wrong or injury within the precincts of your allies?

How could it seek a place for sickness within you,

when you are the one through whom God heals sickness?

How often you terrified it with the sword in every town!

So if it ever advanced, it was when you held out peace.

Why did it not advance into the thick of death and destruction,

as you pursued it on red steeds and outstripped it in daring?

And why not, when the warriors' eyes stared fixedly,

and bright sword-edges grew hot, and brown spears ran with blood?

Fever was not the first hidden foe

who sought to bring you misery, yet you repaid him with kindness.

So you gave it patience relentless toward enemies,

and taught it the patience that wins free of distress.

And before that, you had offered it a forgiving heart,

and a soul whose breath even musk delights to smell.

So if health was renewed for you in its absence,

it was after you had provisioned it with fragrance and forbearance.

And should it find a body among humankind after yours—

though how could it be content with any body after yours?—

then it will have brought him glad tidings and poured

upon him pure joy and abundant bounty.

And whatever the nights have taken from you, they will bring back

    to you—except transgression and sin.

And when the garden withers, rain is hoped for it,

and when the full moon darkens, it turns toward fullness.

And whoever endures war's fire in the furnace of battle,

no wonder his innards turn stony and grow hot.

Nor is it strange that a body should weaken, after

its powers have assailed unyielding fortresses and lofty cities in turn.

For your broad reach has surpassed imagination and all bounds,

and your ample arm has encompassed Arabs and non-Arabs.

So if anything remains of your ailment, these are

your talismans, with which you brought healing long ago:

horses the sky clothed in light, so they advanced

    white-stockinged and white-blazed, though they were foaled black;

and white swords that, through your illness, bewailed estrangement

    from what they once enjoyed, until you joined resolve to them;

and brown lances, as though the night, when you traversed it,

    had clothed every supple shaft in one of its stars;

and every man submerged in iron, as though

he had robed and turbaned himself in the sun's spun threads.

Passions had swept him headlong, until you guided him

to obedience to the Merciful; he submitted and followed your lead.

Thus he knew no homeland but the shade of your rule,

nor any father or mother save at your side.

And O lord of command, conquer: now stand revealed

your opening victories, which have assured you certain triumph.

    فأَنْذِرْ عِداكَ الذُّلَّ والخِزْيَ والرَّغْما

    And O Mundhir of banners and coursing steeds, arise;

and warn your enemies of abasement, disgrace, and humiliation.

And the world has called to you: ‘Abu al-Hakam, rule

by the might of Him who placed authority in your hand!’

And rise to the heights, and claim in full the blessings

the Giver bestowed on you in their richest share.
