    فَبُشْرَاكَ أَنْ تَفْنى عِدَاكَ وأنْ تَبقى

    You chose, then held fast to the firmest handhold;

so glad tidings to you: your enemies shall perish, and you shall endure.

The All-Merciful annulled the falsehood of those who rebelled

against the truth only to establish the truth through you.

This kingship shone as a moon in its fullness

in your countenance only to utterly destroy the foe.

You were, before God, the most honored of those He granted

His caliphate only because you were most mindful of Him,

that through you He might clear the world of care and grief,

and unite the West and East beneath your rule.

You restrung the necklace of kingship upon its thread,

when it had been only a tuft of wool in a clumsy woman's hands.

You made Time laugh and show its teeth, after its eye

had shed unceasing tears in longing for the truth.

You girded the heir apparent with a sword against the foe,

and he marched as though the sun were girded with lightning.

Both at the heart of a sky whose stars you have made

the blades of bright Indian swords, and blue spears:

lightning flashes: even had they not snatched heads in battle,

bodies would have fallen thunderstruck at their peals.

As if the plain, through them, were a lover's entrails,

whose eyes weep blood from the heat of what he suffers.

    نَواطِقَ بالفتح المبينِ ولا نُطقاً

    Guides in the crush of the charge, though without guidance;

proclaiming manifest victory, though without speech.

They tell of your relentless striving against the foe,

as though Satih or Shiqq were in their radiance.

They shine out from the night of battle-dust, as though

one of them were turning Zarqa's two eyes.

And sleek steeds that wrestle armored warriors for the reins,

emptying them of effort, filling them with noble breeding.

They wheel back bay-red with their enemies' blood,

though they advanced against the spear-thrusts gray or piebald.

Awe-inspiring on the day of terror, they gallop like swimmers,

noble, and at evening drowned in their enemies' blood.

They are pledged to take the life of every challenger,

even if the ghoul carried him or he rode the Anqa.

They race toward battle bearing lions of Khafiyya,

who, when death's face terrifies, grow mad with love for it.

    وإِن وَرَدوا حَوْضَ المَنايا فلا فَرْقا

    If they hurry toward the cry for help, they never flag;

and if they enter death's pool, they know no fear.

Servants in bondage, and kings of the Berbers—

and every man of great pride you have won as a bondsman.

They are Islam's host when they attend the battle,

and a horizon for kingship in whatever region they settle.

You embraced them all with favor; they repaid you with love,

and instilled forbearance in them; they repaid you with sincerity.

You kindled for them a firestick that shines with guidance,

and extended to them a hand radiant with sustenance,

and resolve unsheathed to champion faith and kingship,

and judgment derived from divine aid and good fortune.

Traits of beneficence with which you embraced mankind,

and virtues of generosity with which you encompassed all creation.

How exalted your good fortune, how enduring your renown!

And how wealthy whoever hopes in you, how wretched whoever hates you!

Your generous right hand suffices whoever seeks a gift,

and your draught of kindness suffices whoever asks for water.

    وإِن عَظُمَتْ خَطْراً فأَنفِسْ بِهِ عِلقا

    A servant called to you, claiming treasures held in trust;

and though their value be great, how precious a treasure he is!

Through him, the world has consigned the legends of the departed to oblivion,

and the days have wearied the pens of those yet to come.

When he grieves his enemies upon the summits of the heights,

he heals them with a portion cast beneath their feet.

And though he came later, how many a forerunner

of far-reaching stride can claim no lead beside him!

And in your two palms he has means of ascent,

calling to him from the expanse of heaven: 'Will you not ascend?'

So go forth under God's protection, champion of a dynasty

in whose face the shaft of dawn seems to have burst forth.

And He who adorned you with a caliphate's crown suffices you:

He deemed you worthy of it and granted it to you rightfully.
