through stands you made in battle that inflicted on foes
With positions where you had, during turmoil, steadfastness of principle
bewilderment of mind and stumbling of feet;
Confusing intellects and faltering steps

And merits - were it not for your coming closer to us -
would have shown you in the lofty reaches of heaven;
Would have placed you in the lofty heavens

And loads which you carried in the fold of what you took on
the abasement of error and the might of Islam.
The humiliation of misguidance and the honor of Islam

God be praised for your keen blade from him! Whenever
For God a sword for you whenever
discord rises, it draws near with a decisive stroke.
Discord appeared, it came to it with a cutting edge

The swords of error recoiled from it and bent;
The misguided swords recoiled from it and bent
so they are crescents, and it is the perfect full moon.
So they are the crescent and it is the full moon

Wishes were fulfilled for it and through it, and lifted
Desires were fulfilled for it and by it the darkness
from them was the night of injustice and darkness.
Of the night of injustice and blindness cleared

It travels by night toward the enemies along the paths of darkness,
Traveling to the enemies in the paths of nightfall
until it takes its noon rest where heads repose.
Until it unloads upon the place of determination

So through it you entered the lands lawfully yours, and
By it you made your countries permitted
all forbidden things became inviolable to the misguided.
And forbidden to the lost every sanctuary

And you ruled by manifest truth for those entitled to it,
And you judged the clear truth for its people
with justice in decrees and judgments.
With justice from fate and judgments

you rained thunderbolts from a flashing cloud upon its heights,
And you rained on its heights lightning bolts
and drenched it with abundant favors,
Which you poured out in full generosity

watering it with the rain of life, and lifting
Watering it with the life of life and revealing
from it the torment of debt and forced submission.
From it the heat of debt and coercion

وأقمتَهاand you established it للأمنfor security دارَan abode مقامِof residence
You left it a place of banishment for treachery,
You abandoned it to betrayal, a house of removal
and established it as a dwelling-place for security.
And established it for safety, an enduring abode
ونَظَمْتَand you strung دُرَّthe pearls of عُقودِهاits necklaces وعهودِهاand its covenants

And you strung the pearls of its necklaces and covenants
And you strung the pearls of its covenants and pacts
on the thread of this kingdom—what splendid order!
In the thread of this kingdom - what an organization!

And you enforced God's prescribed penalty against whoever wronged it,
And you carried out the limit of God among those who wronged it
striking with the edge of the keen, unbending sword:
Striking with the edge of a cutting, piercing sword

a rebel who, by his rebellion and breach of faith, struck
Seeking oppression in his rebellion and betrayal
the very life he shields and defends.
A soul which is guarded and protected

And though you sealed him in your prison, overpowering him,
And even if you sealed your prison upon him vanquished
so morning and evening he lay, at your hands, pledged to death,
He lives morning and eve as your captive

in the womb of a kindly mother who conceived him
In the belly of a dutiful mother made pregnant by him
on the day of battle, by a slender spear and a sharp sword,
The day of turmoil, from the faded and the swords

yet her womb has labored to deliver him through terror from you,
For from it you painfully delivered, by your power
terror that mounts and casts him out before full term.
One who completes but you make miscarry before maturity
ولقدand indeed نَدَبْتَyou summoned لِحَرْبِهِto fight him فِيin بَطْنِهاher womb

And indeed you summoned to fight him within her womb
And you summoned for his war in her belly
the pounding of doubts and the terror stirred by fancies.
The clatter of suspicions and the turbulence of delusions
ولَوand if اسْتَجَزْتَyou deemed permissible لَهُfor him المَنامَsleep لَرَدَّهُhe would refuse it

And if you allowed him sleep, he would refuse it,
And if you asked for sleep for him, you would return him
so as not to see your eyes in dreams.
So that he does not see your eyes in dreams

And you have filled the open country's expanses around him
And you filled his surroundings in the refuge with
with lions crouching in the thickets,
The paws of lions in the pits

Lying in wait for the harvest of fruits which
for their sheaths to open toward you.
Ripening to you the bindings of sleeves

So rejoice in it—a blessing gratefully acknowledged—
So receive good news of an obligation fulfilled
in a reign joined to lasting endurance.
In an everlasting state

And take pride, for you are the pride of every glory;
And boast - for you are the pride of all glory
and stay safe, for you are the treasure of Islam.
And submit - for you are the provision of Islam
سعياًan endeavor بِهِthrough it أعْدَمْتَyou made nonexistent مِثلَكَyour equal فِيamong الورىhumankind

فَحَوَيْتَso you gained مفخرthe glory of ذلِكَthat الإعدامِelimination
Through striving that left none like you among humankind,
Striving by it you destroyed your equal in existence
you thus won the glory of that peerlessness.
Thus you contained the pride of that destruction
ولَئِنْand though رَعَيْتَyou tended الدِّينَreligion والدنياand this world فَماyet not

And though you cared for religion and this world, it did not
And even if you shepherded religion and worldly life
make you forget to heed my pleas and my claim to protection.
My implements and reins did not make you forget
يومَon the day اطَّلعْتَyou surveyed مشارِبيmy drinking-places فرأيتَand saw فِيin

The day you surveyed my drinking-places and saw, in
The day you observed my watering places and saw
the depths of brimming pools, the humiliation of my position;
In the bosom of meadows, disgrace of my position
وأنِسْتَand you perceived منfrom نَظَريmy gaze تَذَلُّلَthe abasement of موقفيmy position
ووَجِسْتَand you sensed فِيin الأَحشاءthe entrails حَرَّthe heat of أُواميmy burning thirst
and perceived from my gaze the abasement of my plight,
And you sympathized with the humiliation of my stance from watching me
and sensed in my entrails the heat of my burning thirst;
And felt in your inner depths the heat of my burning coal
ورأيتَand you saw فِيin أنيابِthe fangs of عادِيَةِthe onslaught of العِدىْthe foes
لَحْمِيmy flesh وظُفْرُand the claw of الظُلْمِoppression مِنِّيfrom me داميbloodied
and saw, in the fangs of the foes' onslaught,
And you saw in the fangs of my hostile enemy
my flesh, while oppression's claw was stained with my blood;
My flesh, and the claws of injustice from me, blood
وعَلِمْتَand you knew إنif أبْطَأَتَyou delayed عنّيin coming to me أنَّنيthat I
مِمَّاbecause of what أُلاقِيI endure لاnot أَشُدُّI tighten حِزاميmy belt
and knew that, if you were slow to come to me, I
And you knew that if you tarry from me
could not tighten my belt under all I was enduring.
I am not firmer than my situation from what I face
فَسَبَقْتَso you hastened ahead خَشْيَةَfor fear أنthat تَحينَmight arrive مَنِيَّتيmy death
وبَدَرْتَand you hurried خِيفَةَfor fear أنْthat يُحَمَّmight be decreed حِماميmy death
So you hastened ahead, fearing my death might come,
So you preceded out of fear that my death would come
and hurried, fearing my doom might be decreed.
And hurried out of dread that my refuge would be sealed
ونَكِرْتَand you disapproved منamong جَوْرِthe injustices of الحوادِثِevents أنَّنيthat I
ظامٍthirsty وبَحْرُwhile the sea of الجودِgenerosity فَوْقِيَabove me طَامِsurging
And you deemed it one of fortune's injustices that I
And you disliked from the tyranny of events that
should thirst while the sea of generosity surged above me.
I am oppressed and the sea of generosity flows over me
وحَرِجْتَand you were distressed مِنِّيon my account أنthat أهيمَI should wander بغُلَّتيwith my burning thirst
سُقماًin sickness وَفِيwhile in سُقْياكَyour gift of drink بُرْءُthe cure for سَقاميmy sickness
And you were troubled for me, that I should wander with burning thirst,
And you felt embarrassed that I roam with my worry
sick, while in the drink you offer lies the cure for my sickness.
Ill while in your watering is the cure of my illness
وبَصُرْتَand you saw منthrough خَلَلِthe gaps in التَجمُّلِoutward composure خَلَّتيmy need
وفَهِمْتَand you understood منfrom صمتِthe silence of الحياءِmodesty كلاميmy words
And you saw my need through the gaps in my outward composure,
And you observed through pretentious adornment my deficiency
and understood my words through the silence of modesty.
And understood from the silence of shame my speech
فَفَتقْتَso you opened أنهارَthe rivers of الجَدَاbounty لحدائِقيfor my gardens
ونَصَبْتَand you set up أغراضَthe targets of المُنىwishes لِسِهاميfor my arrows
So you opened rivers of bounty for my gardens,
So you opened rivers of generosity for my gardens
and set up the targets of wishes for my arrows.
And set up purposes of desire for my arrows
وفَتحْتَand you opened نحوَtoward الماءِthe water ضِيقَthe narrowness of مَوَارِدِيmy approaches to water
وفَسَحْتَand you made room فِيin المَرْعىthe pasture لِرَعْيfor the grazing of سَوَاميmy herds
And you opened up my cramped approaches to the water,
And you opened towards water the narrowed place of my resources
and made room in the pasture for my herds to graze.
And broadened in the pasture for grazing my herd
وأنِفْتَand you disdained للآدابِfor letters أنْthat يَسْطُوshould strike بِهَاagainst them
جَهْلُthe ignorance of الزَّمانِthe age وعَثْرَةُand the stumbling of الأيَّامِdays
And you refused, for the sake of letters, to let them be assailed by
And you refused to let the ignorance of time
the ignorance of the age and the stumbling of days.
And stumbling of days to overpower etiquette

A kinship through learning called forth mercy for me
Mercifully from knowledge which required for me mercy
from one who fulfills hopes and keeps the bonds of kinship.
From the joiner of hopes and wombs

And its reward in vigil and my poetry

And I will hope for its completion from a Bestower
who is not content with any favor short of completion.
Who does not approve blessing without completion
