Welcome to him whom God has aided and upheld,

    and who protected Ahmad's community from polytheism;

who freely offered his own life to the spearheads,

out of jealous care and concern for the faith of right guidance.

And to him who defended God's oneness from those who subjected it

to humiliation, becoming peerless in lofty honors,

until he restored the faith, white and radiant,

with his swords, and made unbelief dusky and black.

Through his sword and spear, God spread

an outstretched shade over the upright faith,

with noble deeds that testified of him that he was

    mankind's most generous of hand and finest in lineage;

and qualities—were he to sheath the terror of his sword—

whose tenderness would enslave all mankind.

He whose shortest course attained the furthest goals,

    until the farthest reach fell short of his endeavors;

who struck his enemies until they became

like the fabled Anqa Mughrib throughout the land,

with Qahtani resolves amid battle's terror

that left polytheism's abodes a vast, level wasteland.

O chamberlain who inherited leadership and eminence,

and kingship and reverence—most illustrious heir to the most illustrious!

And auspicious commander, and moon that

    dispels darkness with its radiant brow when it appears;

and radiant, resplendent one, and king who

donned generosity and valor as his garment and mantle.

If some stars are called auspicious,

all have surely shone auspiciously for you.

Glory to your return, which left no

    watering-place for keen sword-edges among the non-Arabs.

For God, you fought battles against polytheism

that surpassed the battle of al-Dhana'ib in spectacle.

Nothing equaled Barbaddil on the day you captured it—

a glory that raided time and climbed its heights.

There, for Islam, you unsheathed a keen sword,

trained it to strike necks, and it learned the habit.

And there, for God, you drew it forth so

that no cross could thereafter be worshiped.

And there you took a stand before the monastery,

a stand that marked the appointed hour for God's victory there.

And at Quluniyya you raised a storm-cloud

of war that flashed with death and thundered.

And before my very eyes, on the day you waded to conquer it

through a foaming sea of bright, keen swords,

I saw what I had called down: a falling star,

and witnessed what I had been told of: a charging lion.

While battle raged, choking with its dust

a gaze set ablaze by the fire of Mashrafi swords,

and the sun, bewildered in the sky, seemed

    to gaze upon the world with an inflamed eye;

and the horses touched the ground as though

seeking a way up from it to al-Jawza'.

You see nothing but an Indian sword's flicker,

like lightning, striking another Indian sword in the charge,

and the piercing brilliance of a bright, straightened spear, like a meteor,

with which death is delivered into the darkness of souls.

Then, from you, a lion of Khafiyya advanced against it,

never setting out at evening or dawn except for glory.

You are not content with an hour's unsheathing of the sword

until you see it sheathed in shoulders.

And you left Shant Ishtiban as though

your swords had brought down al-Farqad from among its foes.

Thus you cut short its span with an hour's stand,

which preserved your lofty glory forever.

You built the Muslims' might by demolishing what

unbelief's might had once built there.

And in retribution for his treachery you left Gharsiya

fettered by terror in the open land,

    distraught, passing the day terrified

by your sword-edges, and the whole night sleepless,

disgraced: you overwhelmed his choicest lands

and dwellings with the flame of a blazing inferno.

He deceived the bands of armored warriors but did not protect them,

and led astray the followers of error but did not guide them.

Onward, sons of al-Mansur! Our lives are yours,

and the lives of all in East and West are your ransom.

Today your conquest has made all before it forgotten

in its greatness, as tomorrow too is forgotten before your conquest.
