Victory is your ally against misguidance; pass judgment.

Be wrathful against it for God's faith, and take vengeance.

Success has attended your endeavor as you advance

against it; fate, too, has endorsed that resolve.

For the wellsprings of mighty victory have their reach,

and the recurring gifts of manifest conquest lie near at hand.

How many a victorious stand you have made in battle,

while horses scowl and flashing blades smile!

And the sun in the heart of the sky seems—

with battle-dust veiling it—a warrior clad in armor.

And the banks of battle-dust seem, when

the lions among warriors clash, like clouds raining blood.

Then you plunged into war in the crush of battle,

while death plunged through the clotted blood on breastbones.

Until, against your foes, you reached the utmost of your wishes,

and, in glory, the choicest prizes and allotted shares.

O son of those whose command was never disobeyed

by ʿAd in time's earliest days, nor by Iram!

They raised the canopy of kingship upon their spears,

until time and the world submitted to them.

Even had they sheathed their swords, they would have won

dominion over mankind through character and virtues.

Then they unsheathed their swords in defense of guidance,

by force, and through them faith and the world grew mighty.

Neither the crafting of my verses, nor my prose, nor

my pages, nor the labor of tongue or pen,

can reveal even the least of what my breast enfolds

of devotion to you, and what it keeps concealed.

And your gifts have reached me day after day,

until through them I lost all traces of poverty.

They raised my renown among your servants, and it rose high,

and knit my scattered affairs together in your shelter, setting them in order.

And they settled me in a dwelling within your precinct,

set apart for honorable ties and pledges of protection.

So I set down my saddle within your mighty protection,

and through you sheltered my family among the sanctuary's people.

And clear insight began to bear me gently toward you,

obedient to what loyalty ordained and decreed.

Our mounts were urged on, with a grateful man's preparations,

glorying in your blessings, which cannot be concealed.

And who grows accustomed to the morning sun's

light, yet rests in the hidden depths of darkness?

And how could weakness thwart a resolve to reach you

that has grown familiar with your court of glory and never left it?

And why should I remain, when I have mustered my praises

for the least portion of your bounty, yet they have fallen short?

And would I begrudge you the sacrifice of a soul so often

watered by your generous hands with the dews of bounty?

And should the scorch of midday frighten me when it gathers

in a blaze, while I forget your outpouring of steady rain?

Is time to hold me back from you? Then may no

foot of mine rise toward the blessed shade!

Would I rejoice in life without you? How many a favor

of yours has brought me glad tidings of life—how many, how many!

Can my eye be content with a life, when I do not see

within it your swords passing judgment on your enemies?

Is my face sheltered while yours is exposed

to keen spearheads, while midday heat blazes?

Then I would indeed be ungrateful for your blessings, which

severed the cords of humiliation from me, ending it.

No, by Him whose gifts have led to you

the dominion of kings and the purest obedience of nations,

I will not follow the laggards, nor be seen

striving to win your favor with the feeblest resolve,

until you see how the fruits of generosity fare

with me, and test how I give thanks for blessings,

and my sincere comings and goings show you

the falsehood of what the envious man invented and claimed.

And perhaps He who decrees all things will grant me redress

through your favor against time's reversals, so I may pass judgment.
