Whose pure roots and noble stock you are.

Worth has grown exalted through you.

God be praised for what is in you when blades fall short:

Ambitions whose destinies advance with their advance!

O leader of noble-bred horses, as though

His resolves were their spears and their blades.

A lion who risks his own life in the charge,

With ambitions of mighty worth in the heights.

You made battalions tread the polytheists' land.

In them lay its imminent annihilation and destruction.

And you left the land of León as though

Its dwellings had not been inhabited just yesterday.

And seeking shelter in fortresses that had become

Instruments of doom—their fetters and their bonds.

They were served unmixed war-wine at dusk; at dawn

Its hangover feasted on those furies and deaths.

As though a blaze had spotted them where they stood,

Holding out, and its fire rushed upon them.

Whose chastity was preserved for her husband.

You grieved at her husband's slaying; then she turned,

Her blood-vengeance sought through her eyelids.

From every woman enamored of a beloved, wondering

Whether the sword cut deeper into him or her remembrance.

Its horizons grew impregnable and its regions grew distant.

And its mountains clothed themselves in robes of snow.

And its rivers drew off the full surge of rain.

And horses and heroes strained in pursuit of it,

Lest a visit to it be too distant for the beloved.

Until they crossed the Duero channel, as though they were

Ships whose seas hurled deadly fates,

With cutting swords that cut off its life,

And keen blades that severed its years,

And battalions devoted to the sweet mention of you,

Its sweetness their battle cry amid the tumult.

As though, when battle's darkness deepened,

They were celestial spheres in the terror, revolving around you.

Through your good fortune they joined their fasting to their jihad.

And your hands' bounty was their fast-breaking meal upon return.

Until you arrived with the glory of the conquest that

Brought hopes to life through their joy at its arrival.

And you rose before those watching with a radiant brow,

Like the sun, before which their eyes grow weary.

So the souls of those in East and West are its ransom.

And God is its protector against fortune's reversals.
