  1. أوحَدني الدَّهرُ ولي هِرَّةٌ

    تُؤنِسُني مَعْ طولِ أفكاري

    Time has left me alone, and I have a cat.

    She keeps me company amid my long musings.

  2. تُرى كلينا شاكياً حالهُ

    أشكو وَتشكو قِلّةَ الفارِ

    Both of us are seen lamenting our plight:

    I complain, and she complains, of the scarcity of mice.
