    Is every lover like this,

    Or does my own longing take this form of madness?

    لَحْظُهُ فيه فُتورٌ وَفُتونْ

    I am smitten with a dusky, dark-eyed Turk;

    His glance holds languor and enchantment.

    Who will help me? My aid is tears,

    And the lover's eyes, pouring tears, are a spring.

    Supple of limb, yet hard of heart—

    Ah, if only he would soften toward a lover!

    From his glances and his figure, I am

    Dead—either wounded or pierced through.

    فلهذا تنثني منها الغصونْ

    The east wind's little breezes have imitated me;

    And so the boughs bend before them.

    O doves of al-Liwā, is there a comforter

    For me among you, one yearning or sorrowful?

    Where is one who weeps for a far-off beloved?

    The weeper has perished, though no companion has departed.
