لمتُ لمَا أرادَ منّي

لمتُ لمَا أرادَ منّي

وقد بالبدورِ الطوالِعْ

وقد بالبدورِ الطوالِعْ

I reproached him for what he wanted from me,

I refused what he wanted from me

And indeed, by the rising full moons,

Though the full moons had risen

قالَ دَعني منَ الملامِ فإنّي

قالَ دَعني منَ الملامِ فإنّي

لَستُ ما عِشْتُ للملامِ بِسامِعْ

لَستُ ما عِشْتُ للملامِ بِسامِعْ

He said, “Spare me reproach, for I

He said, leave off blaming me, for I

Will heed no reproach as long as I live.

Have never, whilst I lived, listened to blame

كيفَ أرضى دينَ اليهودِ

كيفَ أرضى دينَ اليهودِ

حيثُ لي بالنِّساء دينٌ واسع

حيثُ لي بالنِّساء دينٌ واسع

How can I accept the faith of the Jews,

How can I please the Jewish faith

When, with women, I have a broad faith?”

When for me, women are a broad faith
