I have remained in my own state, addressing myself,

without any Mount Tur or appointed meeting,

until I understood the address, as though it

had been heard from all my world.

I perceived the fire of intimacy from the valley of Tuwa

of my innermost self; then my darkness shone with guidance.

I swear by the Nun of existence and the Pen that

has inscribed my attributes upon the Tablet of Permanence,

and by Him for whose love I have endured in annihilation,

until my death for Him became my life.

Indeed, through Him I saw my existence among created beings

as my nonexistence, and through Him my pains as my pleasures.

You have been hidden from everything, yet I

truly see You in things through the signs.

Union with You suffices me; it is my first desire

in hope, and the final goal of my quests.

Indeed, yearning to meet You is a pilgrimage

that pelts the lover's heart with embers.

My bodily pilgrimage to You rests on my argument

for a 'where'—though You have no 'where' for me to reach.

And You are my desire when at Mina there dwell

people; and my knowledge is the heights of Arafat.

And surely a heart's house, whose inner recess You inhabit,

is worthier of circumambulation and lesser pilgrimages.

I am not one terrified by Hell, nor one who

    seeks gardens of tender fruits.

Forsaking the delectable for what one wishes to last

is gluttony and greed in acquiring pleasures.

And fear of anything other than You is preoccupation

with other than You, in my lifetime and after my death.

Rather, my desire is my connection with Your Presence, which

    is exalted above motion and stillness;

and my release from my instrument, that I may attain what

    cannot be reached by employing instruments;

and my enjoyment of Your peerless beauty, which

is the utmost of wondrous, intrinsic beauty.

A beauty from which radiance shines upon the worlds,

beloved by people, from my fleeting glimpses.

    نَسَمَتْ فأحيَتْ مَيِّتَ النّسمات

    The spirit of creation is a breath from His spirit;

it wafted forth and brought lifeless souls to life.

I did not pray to prompt giving, nor did I add

to Your knowledge of my condition in times of crisis,

if Your knowledge is present in its essence, and what

You bestow overflows upon scattered beings.

But I steady a heart for receiving,

restless as it is, through the prayers I utter.

And surely, when I pray sincerely, You are nearer

in adversity than my saliva is to the back of my throat.

So eternal praise is Yours, forever,

which no speaker has encompassed in description.
