I have nothing left that can be sold and bought,

except a mat now level with the dust,

and the remnant of a leather mat, to which

the hands of decay clung until it tore and wore away.

A leather mat on which a bedbug spills my blood,

until you see it, though black, turned red.

    In a dwelling like a grave—how often

my two eyes have seen Nakir and Munkar there!

Were it not a grave, I would not have become a thing forgotten

within it, so utterly that I am not remembered.

And the grave is a pleasanter dwelling, since I would not,

despite its cramped quarters, be charged rent.

There is no difference between those in graves and one

who is given no livelihood but a shitty life.

Fie on a life in whose prime

one like me has come to wish to die and be buried!

And many a woman has said: “Is there no journey

through which you might grow rich, though now impoverished?

Travel, for the crescent moon reaches fullness as it moves,

and water is sweetest when it flows.

How many a luckless man, once he stirred, was deemed,

after idleness, a prudent manager by men of sense!”

    النّحسُ نَحسٌ مُنجِداً وَمُغَوِّرا

    So I answered her: “My travelling and my staying are alike;

ill luck is ill luck, whether I head to uplands or lowlands.

Indeed, the cities, though the most spacious places,

have grown too cramped for me—how then can I move to villages?

By God, generosity lies deserted, and

its courtyards of kindness have become a barren wilderness.

And I have asked about the generous, but could find

no one among the people to tell me of those generous souls,

until every tale of a generous man seemed

a fabrication, whoever might recount it.

If what is said is true, then they

existed once—and time has not turned back.

No gracious talk remains with them

for night-time guests, nor a campsite on the heights.

And today, among the sons of the age, the stingiest

is called a prudent manager, and the generous a spendthrift.

Every one of them is ugly in outward form, just as

he is vile in character, in reason and perception.

He ignorantly coupled virtue with vice,

and it is ignorance enough that he will never realize it.

And one calamity is that my livelihood among them

is scant, and perhaps tomorrow unobtainable.

    So if I censure, I censure one who will not mend;

and if I give thanks, I thank one who has shown no gratitude.

So I shall surely endure the times; indeed, I

am misery's brother, whether I endure or not.”
