I am not one who takes reproach as counsel

from a fault-finder who has persisted in his rebukes.

No, nor do I seek to forget my love, even if

longing grievously torments me in love.

How can I forget, while my soul is aflame

and my eyelids are sore from tears?

In love with a young gazelle—when I give my soul

    freely, he stingily withholds union.

Every day I die and come to life

through glances that are ailing yet sound.

And a wondrous beauty who shows you in his jet-black

hair the night, and in his radiant face the dawn.

Beauty wrote upon his cheeks in musk

an inscription for my misery that cannot be erased,

with cheek-down that upheld my excuse; and one like me

is not blamed for loving him, even were he thickly bearded.

He visited me secretly in the darkness, but was betrayed

by the breath of wind, with perfume and wafted scent.

And he swayed like a bough, and nearly

the doves above him burst into song.

So we embraced until the roses of his cheeks

began to drip sweat—the dew of bashfulness.

And we beheld the crescent moon, the curved sand dune, and the bough,

all together: face, buttocks, and waist.
