غادَرتُه بالعَفافِ خِلاَّ

Do not marvel at one whose embrace is forbidden,

Do not be amazed at the unlawful union I abandoned

Whom, through chastity, I left as an intimate friend.

I left it for chastity and purity

خمرْ غَرامي استحالَ خلاً

فَصارَ عندَ الوصالِ حِلا

فَصارَ عندَ الوصالِ حِلا

The wine of my passion turned to vinegar,

The wine of my love turned to vinegar

And so became lawful at the time of union.

So at the union it became lawful
