Your dwellings, Salma, at Dhu Manal

Have stirred the burning pain of my afflictions and turmoil.

The nights ravaged them after their inhabitant departed,

With two erasers: a sand-driving wind and pouring rain.

Those are the dwellings; their landmarks have perished,

And they exchanged fine cloaks for threadbare rags.

Though you once knew gazelles hidden there,

By God, how their faded traces have stirred me!

Like tattoos on forearms, like writing on pages,

Like horses in finery reduced to saddlecloths.

Nothing remains of what once stirred longing

    Except lovers lingering at encampments.

    وانما ذاك فعل الخائن السالي

    Truly, you have forgotten love and failed to keep their pledges;

That is only the conduct of the faithless man who forgets.

Why did you not hasten to an abode where you stayed

Among the stars, with trailing hems?

How often I spent time with the lovely one, in desire,

While Time slept, oblivious to us.

A black woman, her neck adorned with brilliant stars.

As though the full moon, spreading radiance over the land,

Were a king looking out from his lofty hall.

The earth's expanse had its dimensions laid bare

By stars that filled its corners with patterns.

O you distressed by the sickness I used to wear,

I brought it upon myself, and rightly so.

It is passionate longing, yet it is a sickness—

May God never bring near the day I recover from it.

    فمن لصب مشوق رهن بلبال

    Fair, full-breasted women, not gleaming swords, afflict me;

Who will help a yearning lover held hostage by distress?

Leave the armored warriors in battle to their

Hail of spearheads; pelt me with an anklet.

Will I bewail my time for abasement and obscurity.

Were a dweller in a meadow among the upland meadows.

How much I gained from him, without reproach or promise,

Of noble gifts that had never crossed my mind.

    Lofty-nosed and capable, not weaklings.
