Two lights are not hidden from humankind—
Radiance and beauty do not veil mankind
Neither nobility of character nor beauty of appearance.
From generosity of temperament and comely form

Both together belong to Yahya; let him abandon
And both together give life, so let him leave
Concealing the light of his widely renowned eminence.
Concealment of his brilliant light

On every horizon, from the lovely praise of him,
In every horizon of his beauty
Comes a fragrance surpassing the incense-burner's smoke.
Yazeed was known over smoke of ember

Roam among his virtues and drink of his bounty—
Like a rose in his traits and rose in his kindness
Between the garden and the rain-bearing clouds.
Between the garden and the raining cloud

A full moon, upon whom rests a dignified serenity,
A full moon upon him of dignity a calm
Within which lies the fury of every lion in its lair.
Wherein lies guarded every drowsy lion

Like a keen sword when tucked into its sheath,
Like a sword when sheathed in its scabbard
He casts awe into the souls of those present.
Casting awe into the souls of the sedentary

He surpassed the ceaselessly raining clouds, for
I grew on the waving, bending branch for he
He gave as they gave, yet shed no tears.
Gave as he gave and was not miserly

He put the vast sea to shame, for
I took pity on the turbulent, roaring sea for in
In each of his palms are five seas.
Every handful of it lies five oceans

I came seeking your bounty, for it is
I came seeking your generosity for it
The cloud's downpour—nay, the pure waters of al-Kawthar.
Aims at the cloud or rather the clear kawthar

And I saw the face of success with you as well,
And I saw the face of success with you also
So I rode toward you across every green sea.
So I rode to you on every green barge

Long-necked ships sail toward you, bearing us,
Sailing to you in a drunken ship
Like a camel ringed through the nostril.
Like a camel with nostril slit

And the daughters of A‘waj have grown weary of my company,
And the twisted-legged daughters of al-Auj
From the barren, deserted wastes they have crossed:
Who accompanied me across the barren waste

A wasteland like a deprived man in his plight—
Barren as the bereft in his condition
Neither was this man given anything [unclear reading], nor was this wasteland inhabited.
Why obliterate when this was not cultivated
