May my father be ransom for a gazelle whom my eye courted,
With my beloved gazelle I flirted
Between al-ʿUdhayb and the two banks of Bāriq.
Between al-Udayb and the glistening shore

And I asked him for a visit to heal love’s anguish;
And asked of him a visit to soothe my longing
So he answered me with a sincere promise of one.
He answered me with a truthful promise

We spent the night in a deep sea of darkness,
We met as we were lost in the darkness
And beneath a canopy of radiant stars.
And stars like flowers beneath a canopy

I offered him, while night dragged its train,
I gave him as the night dragged its tail
Tawny wine, like unsealed musk to one who breathes it in.
Pale as refined musk to one who sniffs

And I clasped him as an armored warrior clasps his sword,
And held him tight as my sleeve to his sword
And his two tresses were sword-belts upon my shoulder.
His cheeks resting on my shoulders

Until, when the drowsiness of sleep took hold of him,
Until when old age took him
I shifted him away from me, though he was embracing me.
I pushed him away though he clung to me

I drew him away from ribs that longed for him,
I sent him away from ribs that long for him
Lest he sleep upon a throbbing pillow.
Lest he sleeps on a throbbing pillow

When I saw that the night, at the end of its span,
When I saw the night nearing its end
Had grown gray in its locks and hair-partings,
Graying at the edges and leaving

I bade farewell to the one I love and said regretfully:
I bid farewell to my love and sadly said
How grievous it is to me to see you parting from me!
Honor me by parting from me
