He whose forefather is Kaʿb ibn Māmah has

encompassed generosity in its folding and unfolding.

هو اثر النمري صاحبه

بالماء في دويّة القفر

بالماء في دويّة القفر

He favored al-Namarī, his companion,

with water in the desert’s desolate expanse.

واساه حتى مات من ظمأ

ثم انطوى والجود في قبر

He succored him until he himself died of thirst;

then he and generosity were folded into a grave.

وأراك يا زهر اقتديت به

وأراك يا زهر اقتديت به

في صبره ونواله الغمر

في صبره ونواله الغمر

And I see you, O Zuhr, have followed his example

in his endurance and his overflowing bounty.

زهر الكواكب كلها شهدت

زهر الكواكب كلها شهدت

أن السيادة في بني زهر

أن السيادة في بني زهر

The radiant stars have all borne witness

that preeminence dwells among the sons of Zuhr.

دع حاتما يشجي بكفكم

دع حاتما يشجي بكفكم

وأفخر بدعمي على عمر

وأفخر بدعمي على عمر

Let Ḥātim grieve at your generous hand,

and boast of Duʿmī over ʿUmar.

وأفخر بنفسك لست دونهم

وأفخر بنفسك لست دونهم

ولئن سكت فخيفة الكبر

ولئن سكت فخيفة الكبر

And boast of yourself—you are not beneath them;

and if you remain silent, it is for fear of arrogance.
