أرسلتني لوجودِ الحق أبغيه

أرسلتني لوجودِ الحق أبغيه

فكنت أثبته وقتاً وأنفيه

فكنت أثبته وقتاً وأنفيه

You sent me to seek the existence of the Real.

I was sent to seek the truth

So I would affirm Him for a time, and deny Him.

At times confirming it, at times denying

عقلٌ ينزهه شرعٌ يصورِّه

عقلٌ ينزهه شرعٌ يصورِّه

فلستُ أدري بأيّ الحكم أبغيه

فلستُ أدري بأيّ الحكم أبغيه

Reason declares Him transcendent; revealed law gives Him form.

A mind purifying it, a law picturing it

So I do not know by which judgment to seek Him.

So I know not by which rule I should seek it

إن قلت بالشرع قال العقل يجهله

إن قلت بالشرع قال العقل يجهله

أو قلت بالعقل قال الشرعُ يطغيه

أو قلت بالعقل قال الشرعُ يطغيه

If I speak by revealed law, reason says it is ignorant of Him.

If I say by law, the mind says it is ignorant

Or if I speak by reason, revealed law says it drives Him beyond bounds.

If I say by mind, the law says it transgresses

تفنى رغاوةُ صابونٍ إذا وسخٌ

تفنى رغاوةُ صابونٍ إذا وسخٌ

يقوم بالثوبِ والإنقاء يرغيه

يقوم بالثوبِ والإنقاء يرغيه

The lather of soap vanishes when dirt

The froth of soap disappears when filthy

clings to the garment; cleansing makes it foam.

It stands by the clothes and washing sweeps it

والله أثبتَ ما الأفكارُ تنفيه

والله أثبتَ ما الأفكارُ تنفيه

وقام بالحكمِ للأيمان يصفيه

وقام بالحكمِ للأيمان يصفيه

And God affirmed what thoughts deny.

God has affirmed what thoughts deny

And undertook judgment, purifying it for faith.

And stood by the rule to purify beliefs

الشرعُ أدناه حتى قلت إني أنا

الشرعُ أدناه حتى قلت إني أنا

عين الإله وجاء العقل يقصيه

عين الإله وجاء العقل يقصيه

Revealed law brought Him near, until I said, 'I myself am

The law brought it down until I said that I

the very essence of God'; and reason came to banish Him.

Am the eye of God, and mind came to exclude it

إن كنتَ تحصي إلهي ما تجودُ به

إن كنتَ تحصي إلهي ما تجودُ به

على العبيد فإني لستُ أحصيه

على العبيد فإني لستُ أحصيه

If You count, my God, what You generously bestow

If you count, my God, what you bestow

upon Your servants, I cannot count it.

Upon servants, then I do not count it

فقلتُ للنفسِ هذا النص جاء به

فقلتُ للنفسِ هذا النص جاء به

فلتقبلي وعلى الألباب قصيه

فلتقبلي وعلى الألباب قصيه

So I said to my soul, 'This is what the text has brought;

So I said to myself, this text came with it

so accept it, and recount it to discerning minds.

Accept it, O self, and to the wise reserve it

نصيبه لفظاً ولا تعدل به أحداً

نصيبه لفظاً ولا تعدل به أحداً

على لبيبٍ قليلِ الفكر نصيه

على لبيبٍ قليلِ الفكر نصيه

State it in words; equate no one with Him.

Its share is literally, do not interpret it to anyone

State it plainly to a discerning man of little reflection.

To the wise of little thought, allot it

فإنْ أتتك عقولٌ تبتغي أثراً

فإنْ أتتك عقولٌ تبتغي أثراً

بقصه فاحذري ولا تقصيه

بقصه فاحذري ولا تقصيه

So if intellects come to you seeking a trace

If minds come seeking traces

through recounting it, beware, and do not recount it.

In its story, beware, and do not allot it

خصيه في نفسه بما أتاك به

خصيه في نفسه بما أتاك به

ولا تزيدي على ما قال خصيه

ولا تزيدي على ما قال خصيه

Single Him out in Himself by what He has brought you.

Allot it privately with what came to you

And add nothing to what He said; single Him out.'

And do not add to what its confidant confined it
