من وافق الحقَّ في حكم وفي عمل

من وافق الحقَّ في حكم وفي عمل

فإنه عمر الفاروق في الزمنِ

فإنه عمر الفاروق في الزمنِ

Whoever accords with the Truth in judgment and in deed

He who agrees with truth in judgment and deed

is Umar al-Faruq in his own age.

Is like Omar al-Farooq in his time

با نائبَ الحقِّ إنَّ الحقَّ أهلكم

با نائبَ الحقِّ إنَّ الحقَّ أهلكم

لما أقامك في ذا المنصب الحسنِ

لما أقامك في ذا المنصب الحسنِ

O deputy of the Truth, the Truth has deemed you worthy

O representative of truth, truth has destroyed you

when He placed you in this noble office.

When it appointed you in this good position

فإن عدلت وقاك الله فتنة

فإن عدلت وقاك الله فتنة

وإنْ عدلت ابتلاك الله بالمحنِ

وإنْ عدلت ابتلاك الله بالمحنِ

So if you act justly, God will shield you from trial;

If you are just, God will protect you from ordeals

but if you turn aside, God will try you with tribulations.

And if you are unjust, God will test you with tribulations

قرينة الحال تعطى ما أردت بما

قرينة الحال تعطى ما أردت بما

ضربته مثلا للهَمهَم الفِطن

ضربته مثلا للهَمهَم الفِطن

The context conveys what I meant by what

The situation gives what you want with what

I set forth as an example for the valiant, discerning man.

You have set as an example for the wise whisperer

إني لسان صغار لي وعائلة

إني لسان صغار لي وعائلة

وترجمانهمُ في السرِّ والعلن

وترجمانهمُ في السرِّ والعلن

I am the voice of my little children and my household,

I am the tongue of the small ones, my family

and their spokesman in private and in public.

And their translator privately and publicly

قد أصبحوا ما لهم ثوب يردّ به

قد أصبحوا ما لهم ثوب يردّ به

بردُ الهواء ولا فلسٌ من الثمن

بردُ الهواء ولا فلسٌ من الثمن

They now have no garment with which to ward off

They have become without a garment to shield them

the cold of the air, nor a copper coin toward its price.

From the cold air, or a coin for price

وما التمست سوى مرسوم سيدهم

وما التمست سوى مرسوم سيدهم

فإن منعتم فلا ثوبٌ سوى الكفنِ

فإن منعتم فلا ثوبٌ سوى الكفنِ

And I have sought only their master's prescribed allowance;

I have sought nothing but the decree of their master

so if you withhold it, there is no garment but the shroud.

If you deny, they have no garment but a shroud

وإنَّ ظني بكم في حقهم حسنُ

وإنَّ ظني بكم في حقهم حسنُ

ولم يخب أحد في ظنه الحسن

ولم يخب أحد في ظنه الحسن

And my expectation of you concerning their due is good,

And I think well of you regarding their right

and no one's good expectations have been disappointed.

And no one is disappointed when thinking good

إنْ أجدبَ الوقت فاستسقاء صاحبه

إنْ أجدبَ الوقت فاستسقاء صاحبه

يزيله بانسكابِ الوابل الهمتن

يزيله بانسكابِ الوابل الهمتن

If the times grow barren, seeking rain from their master

If times are harsh, ask its master

dispels that barrenness with an outpouring of torrential rain,

He will remove it by pouring heavy rain

فإنه ربُّ إحسانٍ ومأثرة

فإنه ربُّ إحسانٍ ومأثرة

على المقلين بالآلاءِ والمنن

على المقلين بالآلاءِ والمنن

for he is a master of kindness and noble deeds

For He is the Lord of benevolence and favor

toward those of little means, with blessings and favors.
