إذا ما ذكرت الله في السرِّو الجهرِ

إذا ما ذكرت الله في السرِّو الجهرِ

ليذكرني ربي بما كان من ذكري

ليذكرني ربي بما كان من ذكري

Whenever I remember God in secret and aloud,

If I mention God in secret and aloud

so that my Lord may remember me in keeping with my remembrance.

My Lord will remember me for my remembrance

لأنا نقلناه حديثاً معنعناً

لأنا نقلناه حديثاً معنعناً

وما زال ذاك النقلُ عنه على ذكري

وما زال ذاك النقلُ عنه على ذكري

For we transmitted it as a hadith with an 'on the authority of' chain,

For we related it as hearsay

and that transmission from Him has ever remained in my memory.

And that narration about Him remains in my remembrance

فمن كونه كوني ومن عينه عيني

فمن كونه كوني ومن عينه عيني

ومن سرِّه سرّي ومن جهره جهري

ومن سرِّه سرّي ومن جهره جهري

Thus my being comes from His being, and my essence from His essence;

He who is His being is my being and His eye is my eye

and my secret comes from His secret, and my openness from His openness.

His secret is my secret and His proclamation is my proclamation

ولستُ بغير لا و لا أنا عينه

ولستُ بغير لا و لا أنا عينه

فمن أنا عرفني فإني لا أدري

فمن أنا عرفني فإني لا أدري

And I am not other than Him—no—nor am I His essence.

I am none other than He, nor am I other than His eye

So who am I? Tell me, for I do not know.

So whoever knew me, I do not know

فلو كنته عيناً لما كنت جاهلاً

فلو كنته عيناً لما كنت جاهلاً

ولو لم أكنه لم يكن أمره أمري

ولو لم أكنه لم يكن أمره أمري

For if I were He in essence, I would not be ignorant;

For if I were His eye I would not be ignorant

and if I were not He, His affair would not be mine.

And if I were not Him, His affair would not be my affair

فميزه عني الذي فيه من غنى

فميزه عني الذي فيه من غنى

وميزني عنه الذي بي من الفقر

وميزني عنه الذي بي من الفقر

Thus the self-sufficiency in Him set Him apart from me,

So distinguish Him from me by His self-sufficiency

and the poverty in me set me apart from Him.

And distinguish me from Him by my poverty
