When you learned courtesy through me, O utmost limit of my pain,

And fairest of people in essence and in form,

And her charms had already possessed my heart

By report—whose realization surpasses the report—

I clothed her in a robe of piety, from among the finest garments,

As a distinction above her kind, from al-Khidr’s patched cloak.

And it is the cultivation of all proper manners,

Along with embodying the verses and the surahs.

And the covenant between us is that you not disclose it,

Nor make it known to any human being,

So that its origin may be in sincerity,

So nothing of otherness clings to it.
