When things were joined through the alif,

it gave you its form in every composite whole.

Thus the letters of script and speech revolve

between the combined and the disparate among them.

And though they extend into what has no end,

their final return is to the alif.

But for their joining and the secret of its wisdom,

you would know neither command nor prohibition; so stop and fear.

And in His commands, if you have insight,

lies a wondrous secret, yet unrevealed.

God does not command indecency, yet He said to one

who disobeyed Him, as a promise to him: “So run, and do not stop.”

And the wonder we have spoken of is not apparent

in a command He gave them, save to the one who acknowledges.

O mercy that has embraced all existence—nothing

in existence escapes it; so take heed and pause.

And none sees God in anything that appears to him,

among all that has appeared to him, save the dweller in upper chambers,

or one who gives freely when enriched by His bounty,

or one who is in the All-Merciful’s shelter.

Thus he established an excuse for him through what was issued:

commands from Him concerning nearness and proximity.
