لما رأى القلب بنور الهدى

ما صنع الرحمن في نشأته

ما صنع الرحمن في نشأته

When the heart saw by the light of guidance

what the All-Merciful had wrought in its formation,

من حكمة أعطاه ترتيبها

من حكمة أعطاه ترتيبها

علم الذي رتب في هيئته

علم الذي رتب في هيئته

of wisdom whose ordering He bestowed upon it,

it knew what He had arranged within its form:

من فلك دارَ بأحكامه

من فلك دارَ بأحكامه

ليبرز الأعيانَ في فيئته

ليبرز الأعيانَ في فيئته

a celestial sphere revolving according to its laws,

to bring forth the entities upon its return.

إذا بدا علمُ الأحوال يستبق

إذا بدا علمُ الأحوال يستبق

إليه والسحب بالأمطار تندفقُ

إليه والسحب بالأمطار تندفقُ

When knowledge of states appears, it races ahead

toward Him, while the clouds pour down rain.

فما ترى عِلماً إلا رأيتَ سَنَا

فما ترى عِلماً إلا رأيتَ سَنَا

ولا مضى طبقٌ إلا أتى طبقُ

ولا مضى طبقٌ إلا أتى طبقُ

You see no knowledge without seeing radiance,

nor does a stage pass without another stage arriving.

الأمر مشترك في كل معتركٍ

الأمر مشترك في كل معتركٍ

فما انقضت علقٌ إلا بدت علقُ

فما انقضت علقٌ إلا بدت علقُ

The matter is shared in every arena of struggle;

no attachments end without other attachments appearing.

إذا رأيت الذي في الغيب من عَجَبٍ

إذا رأيت الذي في الغيب من عَجَبٍ

رأيتَ نورَ وجودِ الحقِ ينفتق

رأيتَ نورَ وجودِ الحقِ ينفتق

When you see the wonder that lies in the unseen,

you see the light of the Real's existence breaking open

عليك من خلف سترٍ أنت وافره

عليك من خلف سترٍ أنت وافره

وعنده تبصر الأسرارَ تستبق

وعنده تبصر الأسرارَ تستبق

upon you from behind a veil whose fullness is yourself;

and in His presence you behold the mysteries racing

إليه وهي مع الإتيانِ فانية

إليه وهي مع الإتيانِ فانية

عنها وعنه وهذا كيف ينفق

عنها وعنه وهذا كيف ينفق

toward Him, vanishing even as they arrive

from themselves and from Him—how can this gain acceptance?

لذاك قلنا بأنَّ الأمر مشترك

لذاك قلنا بأنَّ الأمر مشترك

ما بيننا ولهذا عمنا القلق

ما بيننا ولهذا عمنا القلق

For that reason, we said the matter is shared

among us; that is why unease has encompassed us.

فالكل في قلق لا يعرفون لما

فالكل في قلق لا يعرفون لما

لأنَّ بابَ وجود العلم منطبق

لأنَّ بابَ وجود العلم منطبق

All, then, are uneasy, not knowing why,

because the door to the existence of knowledge is closed.

ضاعت مقاليدُه لذاتها فلذا

ضاعت مقاليدُه لذاتها فلذا

والله قد رجَّحَ التقليد حين شقوا

والله قد رجَّحَ التقليد حين شقوا

Its keys were lost by their very nature; and so,

God favored following authority when they suffered

بالفكر في نيلِ علمٍ لا يكو لهم

بالفكر في نيلِ علمٍ لا يكو لهم

ولو يكون مفاتيحاً لما وثقوا

ولو يكون مفاتيحاً لما وثقوا

through thought in seeking knowledge that could not be theirs.

And even were it a set of keys, they would have no confidence.

فسلم الأمر إنّ الأمر مرجعه

فسلم الأمر إنّ الأمر مرجعه

إلى عمى وإليه الكل قد خلقوا

إلى عمى وإليه الكل قد خلقوا

So surrender the matter: indeed, the matter's return is

to blindness, and toward it all have been created.

حِرنا وحاروا فخذ علماً منحتكه

حِرنا وحاروا فخذ علماً منحتكه

وكن ذريبته تحظى بك الفرق

وكن ذريبته تحظى بك الفرق

We were bewildered, and so were they; take, then, the knowledge I granted you.

And be its sharp edge, so the groups may prosper through you.

ولا تخفْ إنهم في كلِّ آونة

ولا تخفْ إنهم في كلِّ آونة

في شبهة حكمها لنفسها الفرق

في شبهة حكمها لنفسها الفرق

And do not fear: at every moment they are

in a doubt whose own rule is separation.

تردّهم لمحل الفكر فهي لهم

تردّهم لمحل الفكر فهي لهم

نارٌ تحرّقهم فالكلُّ محترق

نارٌ تحرّقهم فالكلُّ محترق

It returns them to the realm of thought, and for them it is

a fire that burns them; all, then, are scorched.

هم المسمون إنْ حققت امعة

هم المسمون إنْ حققت امعة

كنعتِ خالقهم فاصدقْ كما صدقوا

كنعتِ خالقهم فاصدقْ كما صدقوا

They are called—if you ascertain the truth—conformists,

as their Creator is described; be truthful, as they were truthful.

وكن بهم نائباً عنهم فلبهمْ

وكن بهم نائباً عنهم فلبهمْ

غضٌّ جيد ولبسي دونهم خَلَق

غضٌّ جيد ولبسي دونهم خَلَق

And be, through them, a deputy for them; for their core

is tender and fine, while my garment, apart from them, is threadbare.

ولا تسابقْ سوى الحرباء إنَّ لها

ولا تسابقْ سوى الحرباء إنَّ لها

حالَ الوجودِ وريّا مسكها عبق

حالَ الوجودِ وريّا مسكها عبق

And race against none but the chameleon, for it has

the state of existence, and the scent of its musk is fragrant.
