When the dispatches come from a Sender

To everyone possessed of a heart, with revelation sent down,

Through it I learn what I had not previously known,

And I make myself its cause; He is the best assigner of causes.

But for my existence, none would descend there,

Just as through me the very act of descent came to be.

His names have known our essence,

With sound knowledge, to be the finest abode.

    فشاهدتُ من أوحى السميع لمقولي

    I imagined I was hearing the revelation of His speech;

Then I beheld the Revealer, the Hearer of my words.

I said, “I am the very utterance”; He said to me,

“Reflect: the utterance is not separate from Me.”

Thus I became certain that He is speech, just as

He is hearing: both are from Him, for Him and for me.

And although I convey His revelation

To everyone who hears, I am no messenger.

Rather, in the rank of that company I am an heir,

Through spiritual state and conviction, then through detailed speech.

Call me a follower if you wish: the meaning is one.

Invent no new saying, for I am no better.

Through him God sealed the sacred laws—know this—

And do not act, my friend, outside the proper field of action.

Revelation sent down did not cease after him,

But it brings no sacred law: know this and act.

The spirits moved between me and Him,

East and west, south and north.

I am not one whose heart love has bound

To Layla and Lubna, or Dakhul and Ma'sal.

Lo, my love is unbounded in being, appearing

In the form of whomever my imagination loves in Him.

I have nothing of Him with which to confine Him,

Except what we witnessed of Him when He took form.

Like Mary, when the bearer of glad tidings came embodied,

In a form witnessed in conjugal union.

Then the Spirit cast into her a holy spirit,

Named Jesus, the finest servant and messenger.

I did not know whether it was through the essence that what

I saw in her existed, or whether it arose in contemplation.

I remain undecided about it to this day; I have not declared

What it is—unless He speaks, and it becomes clear.

I said to Him, “If You must sever

My existence truly from You, then do so graciously.

For, by the Lord of the House, I am not one who,

When he speaks, falls short of his words,

Like the son of Hajr, when in his ignorance he said

To a beloved of his near Hawmal:

‘If some trait of mine has displeased you,

Draw my garments out of yours; they will slip free.’

But far from it! How can they be drawn apart when the garment is one?

From whom, then? My very essence is none but the one hoped for.

I offered Him my utmost, in nearness and estrangement,

And my life was sustained by wishes and self-consolation.

Yet this cannot be, for I

Am the very reality of the one I love, without division.

I turned away from them when they said that they

Were other than me; in my restlessness I gave them nothing.

Did my approach, in the guise of one turning away, deceive you?

So too my turning away in the guise of one approaching.

    فمهما تشا فأمر فؤادي يفعل

    My guile is like God's guile, if you know;

Whatever you wish, command my heart: it will act.

For a glory of which you are certain, I refuse—

Whatever the binding creed—all but my self-abasement.

    By God, my glory is nothing but my very abasement;

Know that, if you wish—or, if you wish, remain ignorant.

And—by God—my glory is only that abasement of mine

Which has a special merit for every means of approach.

Thus spoke our Bistami in his witnessing,

With sound knowledge, free of all contrivance.

For union with Him is not truly mine,

And my separation decrees recourse to mediation.

    ففقري وذلِّي فيه عينُ التوصُّل

    I have no union except what I have mentioned;

My poverty and abasement in Him are the very means of attainment.

My proof for what I have said on this is that,

Whenever I come to settle, I am told, “Rise and travel on.”

My journey is only one of Your affairs,

And the affair is but a pot's boiling in a cauldron [reading uncertain]:

Its lowest part is its highest, and what is high sinks low.

So say what you wish, and take it in every sense

That can bear it: the state is mine, while He

Is free of it; do not divert it beyond its proper meaning.

    فإن وجودَ الحق كوني فضلل

    Declare the Real's existence free of every created thing;

For the Real's existence is my being—so call me astray.

Our knowledge of God is nothing but bewilderment:

Thus it came to us in the clear text of the Reminder—ask.

    وإنْ هو ولاّك الأمورَ فلا تل

    Be a wholly owned slave, not a slave to favors;

And if He entrusts affairs to you, do not take charge.

There is only presentation there; there is no dividing line.

For the door that once belonged to the saint has been closed.

Through this He gave rest to the followers, the followers of His messengers.

How great the distance between an effect and an assigner of causes!

The first cause is none but that cause

Which is the moon, high above all who rise.

I am the noblest of forebears in every scene

Where I am numbered among those of noble paternal and maternal kin.

Our father is he whose existence you have known,

Yet you have not done what is due his lofty station.

And my mother, whom I have never ceased to mention to you,

Is from the lofty, pure, perfecting Breath.

    Through them I became the seal among the people of sainthood;

Every saint who comes after us succeeds,

Becoming therein a deputy on behalf of my sainthood.

Thus spoke the people of unveiling on the finest messenger's authority:

Like Jesus, God's messenger, after Muhammad,

Whom the All-Merciful placed in the station of a saint.

He will judge among us by Ahmad's sacred law,

And follow him in every judgment sent down.
