إذا تخلقت بالأسماء أجمعها

إذا تخلقت بالأسماء أجمعها

أسماء ربي في خَلق وفي خُلُقِ

أسماء ربي في خَلق وفي خُلُقِ

When I took on the qualities of all the Names—

If I am characterized with all the names,

my Lord’s Names, in outward form and in character—

The names of my Lord in creating and in character.

علمت أنَّ مع الأمر الذي هو لي

علمت أنَّ مع الأمر الذي هو لي

مني وإيّاه فيما كان من نَسَقِِ

مني وإيّاه فيما كان من نَسَقِِ

I learned that the command that is mine comes jointly

I knew that with the matter which is for me,

from me and Him, within whatever order there was.

Between me and Him in what was of constitution.

لقد أتيتُ على خوفٍ بلا وَجَلٍ

لقد أتيتُ على خوفٍ بلا وَجَلٍ

مني ومنه وعهد الأمر في عنقي

مني ومنه وعهد الأمر في عنقي

I have indeed come in fear, yet without dread,

I have come upon fear without dread,

from myself and from Him, with the command’s covenant upon my neck.

From me and from Him and the covenant of the matter is around my neck.

لعهده فجرينا نبتغي عِوضا

لعهده فجرينا نبتغي عِوضا

على التساوي مع الأسماء في طلق

على التساوي مع الأسماء في طلق

For His covenant, we ran, seeking recompense,

For His covenant we flowed seeking compensation,

on equal terms with the Names in a race.

On equality with the names in freedom.

إني تخلقتُ في أسماءٍ صورتِه

إني تخلقتُ في أسماءٍ صورتِه

بخلقِ من خلق الإنسان من علق

بخلقِ من خلق الإنسان من علق

I have indeed taken on, within the Names of His form,

I was characterized with names that shaped Him,

the character of Him who created humankind from clotted blood.

With a creation from the creation of man from a clot.

لولا يهيمني حتى يعجزني

لولا يهيمني حتى يعجزني

فيما ادعَّيت فأمسى منه ذا ملق

فيما ادعَّيت فأمسى منه ذا ملق

Were it not that He enraptures me until He makes me helpless

If He did not restrain me until He disabled me,

in what I claimed, he would become, through Him, a flatterer.

In what I claimed so I spend the night with it erased.

إني لأشكو أليم الوجدِ والحرقِ

إني لأشكو أليم الوجدِ والحرقِ

لذا تراني ذا شوقٍ وذا قلقِِ

لذا تراني ذا شوقٍ وذا قلقِِ

I truly lament the anguish of passionate longing and burning.

I complain of the pain of passion and burning,

Thus you see me full of longing and restlessness.

So you see me full of longing and anxiety.

لا أبتغي حِوَلاً عنه ولا عِوضاً

لا أبتغي حِوَلاً عنه ولا عِوضاً

فإن بدا طبقٌ رحلت عن طبقِ

فإن بدا طبقٌ رحلت عن طبقِ

I seek neither a change away from Him nor a substitute.

I do not seek to deviate from Him or compensation,

If a plane appears, I depart from a plane.

If an interpretation appeared I traveled from interpretation.

دخلت منه إليه فيه عن نظرٍ

دخلت منه إليه فيه عن نظرٍ

فوافق الكشفُ في صبحٍ وفي غَسَقِ

فوافق الكشفُ في صبحٍ وفي غَسَقِ

I entered from Him, to Him, within Him, through contemplation;

I entered from Him to Him in Him from a look,

and unveiling accorded with it, at dawn and in night’s darkness.

So the unveiling coincided in dawn and in nightfall.
