When a matter presses in on us to distress us,

We endure, for distress ends in relief.

Our Creator, the All-Merciful, has accustomed us to this:

Every hardship He has willed has its relief.

Do you not see the earth opening to reveal its flowers,

Just as heaven has openings within itself?

And the cosmos is above and below, nothing besides the two,

And, as the text states, the command is contained between them.

And everything among created realms that we know

As single is, in the Qur’an, paired.

Even existence, which is our return to ourselves,

Becomes paired through the attributes of the cosmos it possesses.

Thus no single being exists without being paired

By something, save Him to whom division and gradation belong.

That is God, whom nothing resembles

In His creation; through Him daybreak shines forth.

And He is the Almighty; no counterpart equals Him.

And only in the servant’s repentance does He rejoice.

How, then, about one who is needy and dependent

On things within us, if there is no constraint?

Thus we cannot, without qualification, be said to have

The status of self-sufficiency; hence within this is included

Love, a just witness in our case,

When creatures are confused about what I have said.

They are lamps in the darkness if they enter,

Just as they are blindness if they vanish and if they leave.

Glory be to Him, exalted beyond being encompassed

In knowledge by minds, when they journeyed by night into His essence.

Do you not see them retreating on their heels

At what they saw? In that, souls perished.

    وفيه خلفٌ لأقوام لهم حجج

    Thus a thing whose reality is unknown cannot be comprehended;

And concerning it, groups with arguments disagree.

If they looked at the beauty of its form,

They would say it has joined brows; they would say it has a gap between its teeth.

They would say its eyes, as it gazes, have long, thick lashes.

They would say it has kohl-dark eyelids; they would say it has wide, deep-black eyes.

So they held to no single state, nor did they agree

On it in their knowledge of it, nor did they advance.

This is so with creation; what then of the Real? Take heed!

In their houses there are no lamps of His light.
