We wipe our palms on the steeds’ manes,

For they confer bounty upon the soul’s formation,

Because of what came in reports from the best messenger,

With the truest utterance that came from the Holy Presence.

And the critics judged it weak on account of one man

Who transmitted it from reliable narrators, from the sage of humankind.

And how many like it have proved sound! It is one

Of the species, if you wish, or else of the genus.

And what it contains—if you are fair in speech—is established

For it, in our view—woe; certainty from confusion [wording unclear].

And how could there be confusion when the matter is plain,

Gleaming for one with two eyes from the presence of intimacy?

Indeed, the best of people used to do as we do

With their manes; and the sale was at a paltry price.

Indeed, I have cast its meaning in the simplest expression,

And the subtlest for the intellect, through thought and sense.
