This existence, and whoever adorns himself through it—

The First says: “Indeed, the newly arisen is from Us.”

The proof pointed to an origination proceeding

from an originator who, by the evidence, is more perfect.

For He existed while things had no actual being.

So their origination is a clear, decisive distinction

for one who probed the proof with his thought.

Yet “when?” makes no sense in a case like this.

Time itself is among originated things.

And “when?” is impossible concerning time, so speak in general terms.

If they knew the station as I have known it,

you would not ask about Him in this way.

Because of our origination, when we were not, and our manifestation

in our own being—and likewise space—so make distinctions.

    If Aristotle heard our words,

and his men, who relied on him in reasoning—

I have been fair in verification, since I clarified what

they proved by demonstration and established as principles.

And al-Ashʿari says the same as I do,

and, if they are fair, so do the men of old.

    لكن لفهم السامعين تزلزلوا

    By God, their feet did not slip beneath them;

but they wavered because of their listeners’ understanding.

They distinguished between necessity in itself

and necessity through another; understand, that you may comprehend.

    فعن الحقيقة عندنا لم يعدِلوا

    This is contingency according to them all;

so, in our view, they have not strayed from the truth.

But they were not fair when challenged in debate

in inquiry concerning the mystery that is not unknown.

Had they probed the proofs of their reason

and delved into their statements and reflected,

they would have seen, through their fairness, the Real’s vastness

and His acceptance of statements about Him; so accept

true brothers, with no enmity among them.

So His are height in transcendent purity, and depth.

God is too vast to be confined for us by

a creed; thus no belief is invalidated.

Yet each has a true face directed toward Him,

known to the discerning, most accomplished scholar.

The realized knower brought, concerning self-disclosure, that

which provoked denial, though it is no lower.

Thus His is self-disclosure in all beliefs,

and with that came alteration and transformation.

Were this not so, He would be confined, and

His absoluteness would vanish from Him; the abode would be cramped.

Created beings perceive His descent in their awareness

on the Day of Resurrection, a most dreadful day.

    جاء الرسولُ به ونص المرسل

    His felicity has embraced all creatures, every one;

the Messenger brought this, and the Sender declared it plainly.

The Guardian has encompassed everything in mercy.

So know: no reliance is placed on location.

Indeed, God related to us what was said by

people of uprightness and just leaders.

And it is they who call to us, and they have uttered what

the revealed Book brought to us

of censure against us—and that is its true nature—

from a zeal that arose within them, not unknown.

For God’s sake they stood in zeal; they did not intend

to reject Him when they saw Him, so they interpreted.
