There is no one in the existence you know

but has a scale for what he knows.

He judges by it; the one who has acquired it through reason

is a person called, by definition, a human being.

He has perfection, as does his form in the cosmos,

and I have proof of this from revealed law.

So weighing must involve, if you weigh for him,

deficiency and preponderance in whatever deeds he has done.

So devote yourself to it, and do not rejoice in his form,

for denial and forgetfulness have taken possession of him.

When obligation is divided between the two, there appear

prohibition and command, a human being and a devil.

Thus part of the perfection of my existence is that we have

a share of every attribute, containing clear evidence

of the perfection I have attained; so do not

say that the existence of denial is a deficiency.

Deficiency did not diminish the essence of existence, since

existence was perfection, though deficiency is loss.

The matter is too great for anyone to attain,

save the One who is All-Knowing and the Requiter.

When He willed the perfection of judgment, from Him came

in Gabriel’s sacred law, Islam and faith.

Thus it encompassed his higher outer self and his inner self, the low—

—er; excellence perfected him with the letter kāf.

Thus the matter was made threefold; its constitution is fourfold.

Hence a benefactor brought it to you afterward.

    He said: if there is no created being, thereby declare Him transcendent;

then hold fast to negation: there are no entities in the cosmos.

He is existence, so there is no multiplicity in the cosmos,

and asserting multiplicity in created beings is a falsehood.

So look at a [radiant?] wisdom that you have brought,

white like me; then he said: the people are blind.

Would that I knew! There is no sight in the cosmos

with which its beholder, called human, sees Him.

If you fear God, the light will uphold you,

followed within you by guidance from Him and discernment.

God’s wisdom in things is not manifest

except to one who is, in true realization, human.

So you are not human merely by your world—

—ly form, if you are not adorned with the Real.
