السرُّ ما بين إقرارٍ وإنكار

السرُّ ما بين إقرارٍ وإنكار

في المشتريّ وهمِّ المُدلجِ الساري

في المشتريّ وهمِّ المُدلجِ الساري

The secret lies between affirmation and denial,

in Jupiter and the concern of the wayfarer traveling by night.

لم لا يقول وقد أودعت سرّهما

لم لا يقول وقد أودعت سرّهما

أنا المعلم للأرواح أسراري

أنا المعلم للأرواح أسراري

Why should he not say, when I have entrusted the secret of them both:

I am the one who teaches the spirits my secrets.

أنا المكّلم من نارٍ حجبتُ بها

أنا المكّلم من نارٍ حجبتُ بها

نوراً فخاطبتُ ذاتَ النور في النارِ

نوراً فخاطبتُ ذاتَ النور في النارِ

I am the one who speaks from a fire with which I veiled

a light; thus I addressed the essence of light in the fire.

أنا الذي أوجد الأكوان مظلمةً

أنا الذي أوجد الأكوان مظلمةً

ولو أشاءُ لكانتْ ذاتَ أنوار

ولو أشاءُ لكانتْ ذاتَ أنوار

I am the one who brought the worlds into being in darkness,

and if I wished, they would be endowed with lights.

أنا الذي أوجد الأسرار في شجِ

أنا الذي أوجد الأسرار في شجِ

مجموعة لم ينلها بؤسُ أغيار

مجموعة لم ينلها بؤسُ أغيار

I am the one who brought the mysteries into being in one who grieves,

gathered together, untouched by the misery of others.

يا ضارباً بعصاه صلد رابيةَ

يا ضارباً بعصاه صلد رابيةَ

شمس وبدر وأرض ذات أحجار

شمس وبدر وأرض ذات أحجار

O one who strikes a hill’s hard rock with his staff—

a sun and a full moon and an earth bearing stones.

فاعجب إلى شجرٍ قاصٍ على حجر

فاعجب إلى شجرٍ قاصٍ على حجر

وانظر إلى ضاربٍ من خلف أستار

وانظر إلى ضاربٍ من خلف أستار

So marvel at distant trees upon a stone,

and behold one striking from behind veils.

لقد ظهرتَ فما تخفى على أحدٍ

لقد ظهرتَ فما تخفى على أحدٍ

إلا على أحدٍ لا يعرفُ الباري

إلا على أحدٍ لا يعرفُ الباري

You have indeed appeared, so you are hidden from no one,

except one who does not know the Creator.

قطعتَ شرقاً وغرباً كي أنالهم

قطعتَ شرقاً وغرباً كي أنالهم

على نجائبَ في ليلٍ وأسحار

على نجائبَ في ليلٍ وأسحار

You traversed east and west so that I might reach them,

upon noble camels, by night and in the hours before dawn.

فلم أجدكم ولم أسمع لكم خبراً

فلم أجدكم ولم أسمع لكم خبراً

وكيف تسمع أذن خلف أسوار

وكيف تسمع أذن خلف أسوار

Yet I did not find you, nor hear any news of you.

And how can an ear hear behind walls?

أم كيف أدرك مَنْ لا شيءَ يدركه

أم كيف أدرك مَنْ لا شيءَ يدركه

لقد جهلتك إذ جاوزتَ مقداري

لقد جهلتك إذ جاوزتَ مقداري

Or how can I comprehend the One whom nothing comprehends?

Indeed, I did not know you, for you exceeded my capacity.

حجبتَ نفسك في إيجاد آنية

حجبتَ نفسك في إيجاد آنية

فأنت كالسرّ في روح ابنة القاري

فأنت كالسرّ في روح ابنة القاري

You veiled yourself in bringing vessels into being;

so you are like the secret in the spirit of the reciter’s daughter.

أنت الوحيد الذي ضاق الزمان به

أنت الوحيد الذي ضاق الزمان به

أنت المنزه عن كون وأقطار

أنت المنزه عن كون وأقطار

You are the only One for whom time is too narrow.

You are exalted beyond creation and the regions of space.
