The names of His most beautiful Names that manifest

Are manifold in odd numbers and in number.

And in His most beautiful Names, which are hidden

From minds, there is nothing but the reality of the One.

And His most beautiful Names that remain

For us, though aspects of the greatest number,

Have no manifestation, for they are relations.

So how can I make them my reliance in defense?

And people are heedless of what I told them

About them, and swerve from the paths of realization.

    Thus one neither loses them nor brings them into being;

And loss and finding are in peace and in contention.

Would that I knew, when time passes over them,

Will any everlastingness and eternity remain for the cosmos?

And how can it remain, with no cycle by which it is reckoned?

And time is known by cycles and durations.

And you do not name the All-Knowing Real in vain,

But on account of the sustenance He bestows.

Behold, this is a wisdom that flows in its form

With time, but not toward a fixed term.

No, rather, its course is toward the eternity of eternities.

Is there a time within time? Reflect, and you will find.

By God, if my soul knew what it freely gave

Of the knowledge it gave you in bounty,

Through its own essence, unaware of what it bestowed

Of gifts, it would die, though it had found nothing.

So thank your God; do not thank our gift.

Indeed, gifts belong to Him; had He willed, they would bring no benefit.

This is from the standpoint whose aspect is intended,

Just as coming belongs to Him—had He willed, one would not have come.

Indeed, the arrival whose form is in the cosmos

Comes from souls that, had He willed, would not have arrived.

This is the prescribed courtesy; it has

Only a particle of nonoccurrence: the thing did not arrive.

I have spoken of it in words I do not deny,

Since souls have not swerved from realization.

Indeed, the kinds of knowledge that realization brings

Are the kinds of knowledge that lead to right guidance—

Guidance in gnosis, not guidance to felicity; and

Faith brings felicity to the people of forms and the body.

So praise your God; praise no one besides Him, for nothing

Gives felicity but praise of Him; and indeed—

Do not deny natural disposition, for natural disposition overcomes me,

And the Real overcomes it if it is possessed of folly.

The faith of old women is our refuge and our way,

And it is manifestation through it in every belief.

This I profess, for God has preferred it

Over reflection, in unveiling and in transmitted authority.

In all that rises high and all that descends

Low, while declaring the oneness of the One.

My God has stilled my terrors, for they have

A strong inclination toward what is not my support.

Indeed, reliance on what is lower than the cause

Most high—you find its taste sweeter than honey.

And in this I single out neither female nor male,

Nor an ignorant person nor one who speaks from observation.

Rather, its rule has always held in every group,

Of all who possess proof and belief.

Were it not for the All-Merciful's leniency toward you,

I would see no happy person at eternity's end.

He is the God whose favors embrace all,

When generosity flowed through the near and the far.

Do you not see that generosity, through giving existence, embraced all? Thus

No one, through it, shows superiority over another.
