1. حروفُ المدِّ واللينِ

    أتتْ في حال تسكينِ

    The letters of lengthening and softness

    Came in a state of stillness,

  2. لتلويني وتمكيني

    لتعريني وتكسوني

    To color me and establish me firmly,

    To strip me bare and clothe me.

  3. ولي منها وجودٌ ما

    عليه الله يحييني

    And from them I have an existence of some kind;

    Upon it, God gives me life.

  4. ويفنيني فيقصيني

    ويبقيني فيدنيني

    And He annihilates me, then distances me,

    And He keeps me in being, then draws me near.

  5. وإن ضللتُ يهديني

    وإن مرضتُ يشفيني

    And if I go astray, He guides me.

    And if I fall ill, He heals me.

  6. وإن جوّعتُ أطعمني

    وإن ظمئتُ يسقيني

    And if I am made hungry, He feeds me.

    And if I grow thirsty, He gives me drink.

  7. وإن أقبلتُ يأتيني

    وإن أعرضت ُيدعوني

    And if I turn toward Him, He comes to me.

    And if I turn away, He calls me.

  8. فأُوافي عالمَ النورِ

    وإني في عالم الطِّين

    So I reach the realm of light,

    While I am in the realm of clay.

  9. وأى للكاملِ البادي

    بحالِ العالِ والدونِ

    He made a promise to the manifest perfect one,

    Concerning the condition of the high and the low.
