So I am the well-fashioned mystery,

    its creation wrought without fingers.

He set matters in order within it—

my Creator, when He built me.

So I am a rock, and from me

    meanings burst forth.

And I, amid the tall spears,

    am like the painter's horses.

And I am the one hidden away,

    whose body is beyond sight.

And I am the one who answered my Lord,

    obediently, when He called me.

    So whoever sees my existence

    subject to time's vicissitudes,

like the heart of Moses' mother,

    empty of meanings—

    he is truly bereft

of the truths of clear expression.

So I am the root of meanings,

and I am the foundation of songs.

And I am the mystery of an imam,

    virtuous and lofty in station.

    شانُه أعظم شان

    His knowledge is the most complete knowledge;

his stature is the greatest stature.

He was mad with love for me when he saw me

in the secluded chambers of the gardens.

I do not name him, for I

    fear the spearhead's edge.

And the one who understands my words

    is Sakhr ibn Sinan:

the most open-handed in all existence,

    steadfast amid spear-thrusts.

So I, and the mother, and the grandmoth-

er, and the grandfather, are the meanings,

    in our existence, from boun-

    ty, together, without time,

like what flashed before an eye:

    in love, a Yemeni lightning-flash.
