تدبر أيها الحبرُ اللبيبُ

تدبر أيها الحبرُ اللبيبُ

أموراً قالها الفطنُ المصيبُ

أموراً قالها الفطنُ المصيبُ

Reflect, O wise scholar,

Reflect, O wise scribe,

on matters spoken by the perceptive, unerring one.

On matters spoken by the discerning sage,

وحقِّق ما رمى لك من معانٍ

وحقِّق ما رمى لك من معانٍ

حواها لفظُه العذبُ العجيب

حواها لفظُه العذبُ العجيب

And ascertain the meanings he cast your way,

And comprehend the meanings he intended for you,

which his sweet, wondrous wording encompassed.

Encased in his sweet, wondrous words.

ولا تنظره في الكوان تشقى

ولا تنظره في الكوان تشقى

ويتعب جسمُك الفَذّ الغريب

ويتعب جسمُك الفَذّ الغريب

And do not look for it in the worlds, lest you suffer

Do not let him suffer in his elements,

and your singular, alien body grow weary.

As your sublime, strange body grows weary.

إذا ما كنت نسختها فما لي

إذا ما كنت نسختها فما لي

أروم البعد والمعنى قريب

أروم البعد والمعنى قريب

If you are their copy, then why should I

Now that you have transcribed him, why should I

seek distance, when the meaning is near?

Yearn for distance when meaning lies close?
