You have become beloved, and are seen to be dry;

You've turned into a withered love -

But for the fire's blaze, you would not have dried.

If not for fire's heat, you'd wither.

جلستَ فيه زمناً عاجلاً

جلستَ فيه زمناً عاجلاً

لذاك تُدعى صاحبَ المجلس

لذاك تُدعى صاحبَ المجلس

You sat in it for a fleeting while;

For a brief time you sat with him

Thus you are called master of the assembly.

And so are called the assembly's lord,

رأستَ فيه بعلوم بدتْ

رأستَ فيه بعلوم بدتْ

فيك ولولا ذاك لم ترأس

فيك ولولا ذاك لم ترأس

You presided in it through sciences that became manifest

You saw the sciences shine forth

In you; and but for that, you would not have presided.

In you - else you'd not lead the throng.

فأنت تسري في ثمان وفي

عشرين حماسا على الكنسِ

عشرين حماسا على الكنسِ

So you travel by night through eight and through

So you proceed in eight or twenty

Twenty, ardently, over the stars that hide away,

Enthusiastic steps across the church,
