My ship is water-sated; the eye of the Real guards it.

And He is the ship, the waves, and the water.

It sails under His eyes, though the eye is one.

From whom—and tell me, to whom? For these are names.

Nothing exists but this; and we have had

In every occurrence a symbol and a hint.

God protects us from Him and protects Him

From us; so we are the lowly, the mighty.

Through Him we gained might, as through us He gains might; and does

Anything unravel my riddle except wāw and hāʾ?

My existence departed from me through Him, so I am not I.

Nor am I they; these are aims and opinions.

I have said that with knowledge and with confidence

In what I say; and lām and yāʾ have departed.

    وعنه كان فأمراضٌ وأدواء

    So no being came to be through Him—no—nor for Him;

And from Him it came to be—so there are illnesses and maladies.

For that reason, an effect and a cause were spoken of.

For this reason, there are mysteries and things.

And we know them, and He is all-knowing about them:

At the time of begetting, fathers and sons.

He is the distinct figure: no doubt assails us

Concerning Him, while we are shadows and shades.

Were it not for the radiance, the shadows would not appear from Him, nor

Would He draw them back to Himself; thus the lights are fathers.

And the figure is their mother, and from Him they have appeared.

And in Him they were: manifestation and concealment.
