My Lord's majesty is exalted above my existence.

So I marvel that He called me to prostrate.

That is for me, for God is too exalted

And too great to be ascribed to servants.

I have indeed striven to meet someone rightly guided,

Yet among the people there is no rightly guided person.

So, if I look, the distinction between me and my Lord

Is like that between testimony and the witness.

Exalted is He who has risen high, and creation is real.

And how far are heaven's heights from the ground!

And His unboundedness has bound Him for us,

And seeking more has diminished Him for us.

For perfection is His, without a doubt,

So He appears in the near and in the far.

So we exist through Him; thus He established me as needy.

And we are His—so where is the existence of my existence?

To me He was transcendent, so I could not grasp Him.

Then, when He came within bounds,

I laid hold of Him, yet saw nothing but my own self.

So I said, 'I,' and He said, 'My existence refuses that.'
