My eye has never looked upon

A thing it sees, but I behold

Only the One who told us

That He brought creation into being.

I said, 'Then who?' We were told:

    'From waters and earth.'

    For in the universe that

    You see, nothing is seen

    But Him—behold a wonder

Known to whoever has come to know.

    Existence is indeed one

    In its essence, without doubt.

    And whoever affirms this

Concerning Him has spoken no lie.

So we are all in Him,

    Like game in the wild ass's belly;

And the belly is empty of it,

And the Real is beyond dispute.

They indeed said, 'This is no mortal,

But an angel, to our eyes.'

    ما كان إلا بَشَرا

    Yet he was not an angel;

He was nothing but a mortal.

So it is with the De-

ity in existence and among created beings.
