Indeed, I live through this,

For my life is in my death.

من هنا لا عن ممات

The person is transferred by special dispensation

From here, not through death.

ويراه الحسُّ في صو

رة أقوامٍ مَوات

رة أقوامٍ مَوات

And sense sees him in the im-

age of lifeless people.

وبعينِ الكشفِ يعلم

وبعينِ الكشفِ يعلم

أنَّ ذا غير مُواتي

أنَّ ذا غير مُواتي

And with the eye of unveiling he knows

That this is not fitting.

بل حياةٌ استمرت

بل حياةٌ استمرت

في فتىً أو فتيات

في فتىً أو فتيات

Rather, it is a life that has continued

In a young man or young women.

أنا أبصرتُ علوما

أنا أبصرتُ علوما

كالجورِ الزاخرات

كالجورِ الزاخرات

I have perceived forms of knowledge,

Like surging injustice [wording unclear],

في فؤادي وعيونا

في فؤادي وعيونا

من سحابٍ مُعصرات

من سحابٍ مُعصرات

Within my heart, and springs

From rain-laden clouds.

ينتهي من غير حدٍّ

ينتهي من غير حدٍّ

نظر لا بأدات

نظر لا بأدات

It reaches its end without a limit—

A gaze without an instrument.

فأنا فردٌ وحيدٌ

فأنا فردٌ وحيدٌ

وأنا الكلُّ بذاتي

وأنا الكلُّ بذاتي

So I am a single, solitary one,

And I am the whole in my essence.

عبن إفرادي صحيح

عبن إفرادي صحيح

إنه عين ثباتي

إنه عين ثباتي

The essence of my singularity is sound [opening word uncertain];

It is the very essence of my permanence.

كم دعوتُ الله فيهم

كم دعوتُ الله فيهم

بزوالٍ في ثبات

بزوالٍ في ثبات

How often I called upon God concerning them

For vanishing within permanence.

ما أرى غير وجودي

ما أرى غير وجودي

في اجتماعي وشتاتي

في اجتماعي وشتاتي

I see nothing but my existence

In my gathering and my dispersal.

كلما قلت أتاني

كلما قلت أتاني

قيل لي اسكن فسياتي

قيل لي اسكن فسياتي

Whenever I said, 'He has come to me,'

I was told, 'Be still, for He will come.'

كمَّلَ الله وجودي

كمَّلَ الله وجودي

بأبٍ ثم بناتِ

بأبٍ ثم بناتِ

God perfected my existence

With a father, then daughters.

فأنا ابنٌ وأنا أيْ

فأنا ابنٌ وأنا أيْ

ضاً أب في المحدَثاتِ

ضاً أب في المحدَثاتِ

So I am a son, and I am al-

so a father among created things.

ما لنا منه سوى ما

ما لنا منه سوى ما

قد علمتم من سِمات

قد علمتم من سِمات

We have from Him nothing but what

You have already known of traits,

ونعوتٌ أظهرتها

ونعوتٌ أظهرتها

محدثاتٌ وصفات

محدثاتٌ وصفات

And descriptions made manifest by

Created things and attributes.

لم أجد عين غناه

لم أجد عين غناه

دون ذكري حين ياتي

دون ذكري حين ياتي

I have not found the essence of His self-sufficiency

Apart from mention of me when He comes.

فغناه عن وجودي

فغناه عن وجودي

وأنا فيه بذاتي

وأنا فيه بذاتي

Thus He is independent of my existence,

While I am in Him in my essence.

ليت شعري كيف هذا

وبقائي في وفاتي

وبقائي في وفاتي

If only I knew how this could be,

While I endure within my death.

وأنا غير فقيد

وأنا غير فقيد

ناظرا حال حياتي

ناظرا حال حياتي

Yet I am not lost,

Beholding the state of my life.

قد تحّيرتُ وما لي

قد تحّيرتُ وما لي

مخرجٌ من غمراتي

مخرجٌ من غمراتي

I have grown bewildered, and I have no

Escape from my engulfing depths.

إنني عبدٌ ذليلٌ

إنني عبدٌ ذليلٌ

لرفيعِ الدرجات

لرفيعِ الدرجات

I am indeed a lowly servant

Of the One exalted in rank.

أرى كثراً في وحيدٍ

أرى كثراً في وحيدٍ

يا لها من خطرات

يا لها من خطرات

I see multiplicity in a single one—

Oh, what passing thoughts!

كلما رُمتُ انفكاكا

كلما رُمتُ انفكاكا

لم أزل في عثراتي

لم أزل في عثراتي

Whenever I sought release,

I remained amid my stumblings.

فتراني الدهر ابكي

فتراني الدهر ابكي

لدوامِ الحَسَرات

لدوامِ الحَسَرات

So you see me weeping throughout time,

Because of unending regrets.

ثم ناجاني بأمرٍ

ثم ناجاني بأمرٍ

فيه ذكرُالحسنات

فيه ذكرُالحسنات

Then He spoke intimately to me of a command

In which good deeds are mentioned,

إن سمعنا وأطعنا

إن سمعنا وأطعنا

ثم ذكر السيئات

ثم ذكر السيئات

If we hear and obey;

Then mention of evil deeds,

إنْ سمعنا وعصينا

إنْ سمعنا وعصينا

ما أتى في الكلمات

ما أتى في الكلمات

If we hear and disobey

What has come in the words,

بين إلقاءٍ صريح

بين إلقاءٍ صريح

بيّن أو نفثات

بيّن أو نفثات

Whether through an explicit imparting,

Clear, or through breathings.

ثم ما لي غير سكني

ثم ما لي غير سكني

درج أو دركات

درج أو دركات

Then I have nothing but my dwelling

On ascending steps or descending depths,

في شهودٍ أو حجابٍ

في شهودٍ أو حجابٍ

عن نعيمِ اللحظات

عن نعيمِ اللحظات

In witnessing, or veiled

From the bliss of glances.
