إنَّindeed الغمامَthe cloud مطارحُalighting places الأنوارِthe lights
إنَّ الغمامَ مطارحُ الأنوارِ
ولذاكand for that reason أضحىhas become أقربَthe nearest of الأستارِthe veils
ولذاك أضحى أقربَ الأستارِ
Indeed, the cloud is where lights alight,
and thus it has become the nearest of veils.
منهfrom it تفجرتِgushed forth العلومُthe sciences علىupon النهىthe intellects
منه تفجرتِ العلومُ على النهى
وبهand through it يكونcomes about الكشفunveiling للأبصارfor the eyes
وبه يكون الكشف للأبصار
From it, knowledge gushed forth upon the minds,
and through it comes unveiling for the eyes.
فيهin it البروقُthe lightning flashes وليسand does not يذهِبُtake away ضَوءُهاtheir light
فيه البروقُ وليس يذهِبُ ضَوءُها
أبصارَناour sight لتقدسَowing to the sanctity of الأبصارvision
أبصارَنا لتقدسَ الأبصار
In it are lightning flashes, yet their light does not take away
our sight, owing to the sanctity of vision.
فيهin it الرعودُthe thunderclaps وليسand does not يذهبُtake away صوتهاtheir sound
فيه الرعودُ وليس يذهبُ صوتها
أسماعَناour hearing لتنزُّهِowing to the transcendence of الأسرارِthe inner secrets
أسماعَنا لتنزُّهِ الأسرارِ
In it are peals of thunder, yet their sound does not take away
our hearing, owing to the transcendence of the inner secrets.
فيهin it الصواعقُthe thunderbolts ليسdoes not يذهبُefface رسمناour form
فيه الصواعقُ ليس يذهبُ رسمنا
إحراقهاtheir burning لعنايةِowing to care for الآثارthe traces
إحراقها لعنايةِ الآثار
In it are thunderbolts; our form is not effaced
by their burning, owing to care for the traces.
فيهin it الغيومthe clouds وليسand does not يهلكdestroy سيلهاtheir torrent
فيه الغيوم وليس يهلك سيلها
أشجارناour trees لتحقيقِِto realize الإيثارselflessness
أشجارنا لتحقيقِِ الإيثار
In it are clouds, yet their torrent does not destroy
our trees, so that selflessness may be realized.
ماthere is no بعدَهbeyond it شيءanything سوىexcept مطلوبِناthe One we seek
ما بعدَه شيء سوى مطلوبِنا
ربُّLord of الأنامall beings معwith اسمِهHis name الغفَّارthe Ever-Forgiving
ربُّ الأنام مع اسمِه الغفَّار
Beyond it is nothing but the One we seek,
the Lord of all beings, with His name the Ever-Forgiving.
فإذاso when انجلىclears ذاكthat الغمامthe cloud فذاتهthen His Essence
فإذا انجلى ذاك الغمام فذاته
تبدوappears إلىto الأنوارthe lights فيwithin الأنوارthe lights
تبدو إلى الأنوار في الأنوار
So when that cloud clears, His Essence
appears to the lights within the lights.
والنورُand the light يدرجenfolds مثلهits like فيwithin ضوئهits radiance
والنورُ يدرج مثله في ضوئه
كالشمسِlike the sun لاdoes not تُفنيextinguish ضياءَthe radiance of النارfire
كالشمسِ لا تُفني ضياءَ النار
And light enfolds its like within its radiance,
like the sun, which does not extinguish the radiance of fire.
فترىthus behold البصائرُinner vision والعيونُand the eyes جلالَهHis majesty
فترى البصائرُ والعيونُ جلالَه
وجمالَهand His beauty فيin الشمسِthe sun والأقمارِand the moons
وجمالَه في الشمسِ والأقمارِ
Thus inner vision and the eyes behold His majesty
and His beauty in the sun and the moons.
فافهمso understand إشارتناour allusion تفزyou will triumph بحقائقwith realities
فافهم إشارتنا تفز بحقائق
تخفىare hidden علىfrom العقلاءthe rational-minded والنظَّارِand speculative thinkers
تخفى على العقلاء والنظَّارِ
So grasp our allusion, and you will attain realities
hidden from rational minds and speculative thinkers.
