If God, the Generous, knows my innermost self,

then I care not if anyone besides Him is displeased.

And my station with my Guardian is certain to me,

so I care not who draws near today or goes far away.

How astonishing, then, is a knower who said that he

was consumed with love for God, yet did not cast away

what was other than his Lord from himself, and thought ill

of us. When will you reach him, so that he may correct the error?

If one who displayed concealment by my side

is swayed by the tale-bearers' words, then he has fallen.

But my Lord has come, so I have come to Him,

and I said to my secret, 'The final goal alone is enough for you.

And do not turn toward anyone who thinks ill of us, nor

turn aside to him; and forgive any wrong he let slip.'
