إنيindeed I لأعلمI surely know أنthat شيئاًa thing ماnot هناhere
ويقالُand it is said ليto me ماnot أنتyou عنهfrom it بغائبِabsent
I surely know that a thing is not here,
I know that something is here, though told it's not,
And I am told, "You are not absent from it."
And a believer accepts both truths devout.
وتحققand ascertained الأمرينthe two matters عبدٌa servant مؤمنٌbelieving
بمغيبةthrough absence عناfrom us وقولُand the words of الصاحبِthe companion
A believing servant has ascertained both matters,
Thus in each view submissive is he found,
Through absence from us and the companion's words.
Though reconciling opposites confounds.
فتراهso you see him فيin هذاthis وذاكand that مقلِّداًfollowing authority
والقولُand the assertion بالحكمينof both judgments ضربةُa stroke لازبِbinding
So you see him following authority in this and that,
Like denying what all saw he hit the mark,
And affirming both judgments is unavoidable.
Since the Imam, by God's will, cannot embark
كالنفيlike the denial فيin الرميthe throwing الذيwhich شهدواthey bore witness لهto it
ثبتاًas established منfrom الراميthe thrower الإمامthe imam النائبthe deputy
Like the denial of the throwing to which they bore witness,
On falsehood. So in both views we acquiesce,
Affirmed as coming from the thrower—the imam, the deputy.
As when stolen goods are in the robber's dress.
لاnot يمترونthey doubt ولاand not يشكhe doubts بأنهthat it is so

لمdid not يرمِthrow إلاexcept الحقthe Real فيin يدthe hand of حاجبa chamberlain
They do not doubt, nor does he doubt that
Judging thus in both regards is like the case
None but the Real threw through a chamberlain's hand.
Of that puzzle, where anger met with grace.
فالحكمso the judgment فيin هذاthis وذاكand that كمثلهlike its counterpart
فيin قصةthe tale of المغصوبthe usurped thing معwith يدthe hand of غاضبan angry man
So the judgment in this and that is like its counterpart
A strange affair whose secret is unknown,
In the tale of the usurped thing and an angry man's hand.
Save to Him, the Everlasting, on His throne.

A strange cycle: none knows its secret
Except the one who comes in the form of one departing.
