أرسلتI sent ماwhat أرسلتI sent منof أدمعيmy tears
تذكرةa reminder منيfrom me لهto him إنْif يعيhe heeds
I sent what I sent of my tears,
The tears I shed, I sent as a reminder
a reminder from me to him, if he would heed.
That he may remember me if he cares
فلمso did not يعرِّجْpause والتوىand turned aside هارباfleeing
وقالand he said لاdo not تسألask فهذاfor this معيwith me
But he did not pause, and turned aside, fleeing,
Yet he turned away and fled like a fugitive
and said: Do not ask, for this is with me.
Saying ask me not, for this is with me
وإنماand only أطلبI seek ليfor myself معرضاone who turns away
قدalready اختفىhe hid عنيfrom me فيin المخدعthe inner chamber
I seek only, for myself, one who turns away,
I but seek an excuse to turn away
who has hidden from me in the inner chamber.
That has hidden from me in seclusion
إناindeed we دعوناهمwe called them عسىperhaps يرجعواthey will return
والخائبُand the disappointed one المحرومthe deprived one لمdid not يسمعhear
Indeed, we called them, hoping they would return,
We called them in hopes they would return
but the disappointed, deprived one did not hear.
But the disappointed deprived heard not
وماand not بهin him منany طرشِdeafness حاكمprevailing
لكنهbut he استحيىfelt ashamed فلمso did not يرجعreturn
And no deafness holds sway over him;
Though the judge was not adverse to them
but he felt ashamed, so he did not return.
He was too shy and did not return
أتبعهI follow him أذكرُهI remind him نعمتيmy favor
وماand not برحتُI left اليومَtoday منfrom موضعيmy place
I follow him, reminding him of my favor,
I reminded him of my bounty on him
though today I have not left my place.
And stayed not today from my place

وأنتَand you تدريknow أننيthat I مدَّعيa claimant
So he said to me: You mock me, my lord,
He said to me, you mock me my lord
and you know that I claim,
When you know that I am a pretender
بالحالِthrough one's state لاnot بالقولthrough speech فيin حبكمlove for you
لأننيbecause I أخشىI fear إذاif ادَّعيI make a claim
through my state, not through speech, to love you,
In my state, not my words, is my love for you
for I fear that, if I make a claim,
For I fear if I pretend

he will say to me: Tell me, what is the evidence for
He will say, show me proof
the truth of what you claim?
Of the truth of your claim

Do not seek proof from one who speaks,
Seek not proof from a speaker
unless you hear him make a claim,
Unless you hear him pretend

He who he is, and you are the one
who understands my words about him—do not be distressed.
Who understands my words, so do not worry
